They're Just So Darned Busy, Is All
The House ethics committee has decided -- brace yourselves -- to hold off the public trials of Esteemed Tax Cheat Charlie Rangel (D-NY) and Accused Influence Peddler Maxine Waters (D-CA). Until after the midterms. From AOL's Politics Daily:
Both Rangel and Waters have been formally charged by the committee with multiple violations of House rules, but the question of when to hold trials of the two senior Democrats fell victim to partisan arguing during the week Congress adjourned for the duration of the election season.
House Republican leader John Boehner joined the five GOP members of the House Ethics Committee in calling for the trials before the election, saying Rangel and Waters "deserve a chance to clear their names."
"If I recall, both Mr. Rangel and Mrs. Waters asked the ethics committee for a speedy trial so that they could clear their names," Boehner said. "And I think the fact that the five Republican members of the ethics committee have had to resort to sending a letter to the chairman indicates that all is not well."
That's easy for Boehner to say. But to be fair, they've been awfully busy up there on the Hill, what with not passing a budget, not voting on tax cuts, and inviting television personalities to testify. I can see how scheduling an ethics hearing might be tough to fit in.

I find it hard to believe that we have crooks in government! And that their nefarious deeds are covered by leadership! I'm shocked, just shocked!
But seriously, this is the fruit of gerrymandering. We have created fiefdoms - especially black fiefdoms - and this is the predictable result.
We can leverage this for political gain, but our civic health demands that we root the problem out.

You know, I hate to say it, but I actually think Maxine Waters is innocent of the charges. As they've been defined. I can't believe I'm saying that, but basic fairness compels me to admit it.
Rangel, though, is a tax cheat and a liar. He should be tossed out of there like a common thief.
