“They couldn’t have been spies,” Ms. Gugigi said. “Look what she did with the hydrangeas.”
Well, by all means them...let them go then.
The whole point of being 'undercover', 'illegal', or a 'sleeper' is to blend in. Or as one of the set of spies says in their own words, ‘to do as the Romans do’.
Trust no one! ;-)

Every nation has spies. It's good that we caught some, but I'm not sure much can be drawn from this news.
They were probably good neighbors with many genuine friendships with Americans. Conflicting loyalties occurs throughout literature and film because such conflict is universal; it's human. Most of us are lucky enough that the loyalties which conflict are not so dire. But we all know from experience that it's possible to care deeply about two things which cannot interact peacefully with one another.
Sometimes, friends are enemies (and still friends). It seems uncommon for one to allow such conflicting perceptions about a person to coexist. People generally choose to indulge either one view or the other. I often wonder if this is because they are unable or unwilling to acknowledge persons wholly.
P.S. "Wholly" is one of those words that just never looks right written down. It seems so close to, yet completely lacks the gusto of, "Golly!".
P.P.S. Yes, I realize placing the period outside the quotation mark is incorrect, but it makes sense. Pathetic as it may be, I am very deliberately a punctuation rebel. =P

Speaking of spies, am I the only one wondering about the Logo? I mean, do we have any idea who he is or what he's doing here?
Apart from that: Really nice work from the Feds.

I like to think of the Logo as an experimental AI.
