They Shot Tatlises?
I'm here in what is supposedly the most wired country in the world, but in fact have been almost in a media blackout for two days. The meeting schedule has been so ridiculously intense that I've gone for about 48 hours without checking the news, probably for the first time in ten years. I just checked into the hotel, and before collapsing with exhaustion checked the news and as always checked the Turkish news first.
I was stunned to see this headline: Turkish singer Tatlıses still in critical list, culprits still at large.
Tatlıses was leaving the Beyaz TV Channel studio building in Istanbul’s Şişli district, where he was filming a program, after midnight Sunday when unknown assailants in a black car opened fire with long-barreled weapons before fleeing the scene.
No one mentioned that to me here in Israel, where perhaps no one would think of this as shocking news.
This is shocking news. In America, it would be like finding out that someone shot, say, Bruce Springsteen. It made me feel uneasy and homesick, as if I should be there trying to figure out what happened and how people are reacting.
What an awful thing. Who would shoot Tatlisis?
My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

Re: They Shot Tatlises?
Springsteen? Springsteen! Claire, don't do him that honor.
Okay, you're tired.
I'm not one of those conservatives who think his talent eclipses his odious and mean-spirited politics

Re: They Shot Tatlises?
Severely Ltd., what talent?
Claire, I thought of you when I read about the shooting. So you don't have any ideas? I wondered about him being westernized and popular and, thus, to some people's way of thinking, "decadent." Can't help it, but that's the first place my suspicion goes for anyone in an Islam dominated country, particularly one increasingly dominated by Islamists.

Re: They Shot Tatlises?
My thoughts were along those of Caryn. Two major possibilities: 1. Financial - along lines related to corruption etc 2. A religious "statement" As always CB, you raise important topics generally ignored by the western media, who remind me of "Snoopy Soccer" played by yound kids - where they all cluster around the ball rather than play specific positions. (Right now the soccer ball is Japan)

Re: They Shot Tatlises?
I had never heard of this fellow until I read Claire's piece here. But apparently he has some sort of following even here in Jerusalem, as some of the young guys were discussing him in the barber shop this morning. And I was pleased with myself for knowing what they were talking about.
Thanks for that, Claire!
