The antibiotics have taken effect, with the result that I have finally risen from what felt like my deathbed, and what headline should greet me as I skimmed my bookmarks just now but this truly glorious specimen in the New York Times?  To wit:

G.O.P.-Led House Votes to Cut Trillions Over 10 Years

House Republicans forced through a partisan budget plan that has no chance of Senate passage but would pare spending by $5.8 trillion over ten years.

The people's chamber, the United States House of Representatives, has now voted for the most sweeping reform of the federal government in decades--certainly since Lyndon Johnson's Great Society.  And the contempt with which the Times packs that lead?  "Forced through"?  "Partisan"? "No chance of Senate passage"?  So much the better.

To paraphrase Gore Vidal, it is not enough for the Tea Party to triumph.  The New York Times must gnash its teeth.

I love it when the New York Times gnashes it's teeth, what a beautiful sound.

Peter:

I am glad you are feeling better.

It is not enough for the House to pass this - Paul Ryan must sign it, as President (nothing is going to happen before then)

I was somewhat gratified to hear Tucker Carlson say towards the end of the depressing podcast that Paul Ryan should run. Also Stephen Hayes on Brett Baier. Momentum is building...

If the best we can come up with is Donald Trump - OK, he can sign it :-)

The antibiotics have taken effect, ...

I'm sick of all the anti-biotics talk. You can't win by being anti, anti, anti.  What we need is someone who can delineate a pro-biotics policy.

Maybe this means they finally get it that even though the Bill won’t make it through the Senate and even if it did Obama would veto it, that is no reason not to pass it.  It is good politics when Republicans can tell the American people they have solutions, they have done their part, it is the Democrats that are against reigning in runaway government spending.  The proof is in the pudding, we passed a budget that will reduce government and stimulate economic growth but the Democrats want to keep sucking the private sector dry and killing job creation. That’s a debate they can win, if they are willing to have it.

Well, they’ve tried being for, for, for and that didn’t work out to well.  Sounds like maybe you’d like them to just dissolve the Republican party and become Democrats.

Something just did happen.  They passed a budget that cuts the size of government and would, if it became law, stimulate economic growth.  That’s is something, it’s more than something, it’s huge.  It contrasts the Republicans as the pro-growth and freedom party against the big-government-nannie party of the Democrats.  That how political brands are created and that’s what has to happen to win elections.  Independents voted Republican in 2010 because the Democrats drove them away, not because the Republicans attracted them.  Doing stuff like this is how Republicans can get independents to vote Republican for the right reason, not just because the Democrats screwed up and the Republicans were the only other game in town.

Have you noticed how Nancy Pelosi is going around talking about how the two parties need to become more alike so elections won’t matter so much?  That tells you something has happened, and she knows it.

I keep expecting Nancy Pelosi to break out in song, singing "Don't Cry for Me, California"...

Peter, the Republicans need to find the best individuals in the PR business to begin explaining this to the general public at large.  I just informed my roomate that what was reported in the MSM as "a cut to seniors and destroying Medicaid" was totally false.  Even then she still is sceptical, she has bought the Republicans are for the rich and will eat poor people alive bit.  My roomate is socially conservative but has totally bought the Democratic party lies.  She is reasonable and if the Republicans begin a game plan to persuade the public they can succeed.  The key is they need to start NOW.

I hate to rain on your parade, but they didn't 'did it' at all.

What they did today was "Non Binding"    Spell that Symbolic.

I'm waiting until they pass it for real before celebrating.  Somehow I think it's going to be watered down, and compromised away before it even gets over to the senate.

And, OH, By the Way, NPR, NEA and CPB are STILL Funded!

Why did the Republicans choose a Friday afternoon to hold the vote? Passing this budget plan is supposed to be the big shot across the Democrats' bow, starting the long conversation about entitlements.  Friday afternoons are known as the time slot when embarassing revelations are released to the media, because the fewest number of people are paying attention.  Making a symbolic, bold statement of principle (which is what this vote was) doesn't have much impact when most of the public isn't listening.

You are quite correct. It's very frustrating that the Republicans are such abject failures when it comes to marketing and PR.   They naively cling to the belief   that  basic common sense is enough to win the day.

This is great news. We may rightfully celebrate. The Senate and White House will torpedo it, of course. But they can't hide from the issue, and that's huge.

It's aggravating how all the best  candidates are bowing out.  Mitch Daniel's wife doesn't want him to run.  Paul Ryan has young children he wants to raise first.  Chris Christy doesn't "feel ready."  Our best bet might end up being Gingrich!  Eek!

I find it unusual that anyone claiming to be an advocate for fiscal responsibility would do anything but bemoan Ryan’s rubbish.    According to Mr. Ryan's analysis of his proposal it would continue adding to the debt for the next 10 years, continue the growth of the Federal Government over this period  of time and in my opinion ensure the collapse of the dollar and  an ensuing debt crisis.   His plan is not a realistic response to what is a crisis.  Is it as bad as what the socialist who currently control 2/3 of the federal government are proposing?  No, but it is certainly nothing to cheer about.  The GOP is not talking about cutting the Federal government by 30%, which is what needs to be done, they are proposing to continue to GROW the Federal government, and are being called courageous for doing so.

yea.  I'm with this sentiment.   That sham/scam that was the '11 budget.  The President's 'speech' the other day.  Boehner as 'leader.  Moral victories don't count for anything.  We're getting hosed.  All I can hear is Pat Caddell saying, "Republicans are soooo stupid!"  And now we're supposed to feel good and optimistic about this? Come on.

Seriously, NYT is gnashing it's teeth.  And?  The House had to pass just to keep the base from going medieval them.  So, I pose the question, what exactly did they do?

Perhaps the GOP PRopaganda machine should start by convincing us conservatives that they are serious.  Symbolic bill at midnight.  WOW... that will win us over.  Let them at the very least pass an actual budget bill that shows a united, courageous and conservative GOP.  Oh?  Too much to hope for... Yep, you bet.  Joseph Goebbels had more to work with.

Until then, Peter, at least the antibiotics give you something to cheer about !!

I didn’t realize it was just a non-binding resolution.  I thought those dumb crackers had actually done something for a change.

TeeJaw:

By nothing happening I meant nothing will be signed into Law - it is widely thought to be dead on arrival in the Senate, even.

It is an important symbolic vote, for sure.

Joseph Eagar:

I agree it is frustrating that the best candidates are not running (yet). Donald Trump seems to be running away with it at the moment - I think he is doing a great job as a Pitbull, much needed in a field of hesitant Rino squishes, maybe clearing the way for Paul Ryan or Michelle Bachmann (we dare not mention Sarah Palin), or it wouldn't be the end of the world if Trump became President - Eek, indeed!

I just hope that Ryan has the fire in his belly to want a one-on-one debate, or 3, with The One. Then he can sign his budget :-)
