There Will Be No Homemade Lunches Allowed On the Road To Serfdom
Ah yes - our national march toward government mandated behavior continues.
We’ve already had it made clear to us that on the Road to Serfdom, there will be no soda. And no happy meals. And no chicken wings.
There will also be no homemade lunches in schools, either - at least not in this Chicago school, where homemade lunches are banned.
Notice the ignorant certainty with which the school administrator announces her in loco parentis powers to be safer for children than the wisdom of their own parents:
Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school. It's about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom).
Notice too that most government prohibitions are geared toward children. As a youth sports coach for the past dozen years I understand the concept of fighting for their allegiance – the fundamentals children learn as youngsters will stay with them. Teach children to depend on the government early, and that is what they’ll know later.
What government doesn’t know is that children are not one size fits all. I’m raising four, and each has different needs than the next.
Also, something else government never seems to know about parenting – the need for kids to have some mindless fun!
I try to give my kids formal education, music lessons, religious tradition and all things good and sublime. But once in awhile, I will throw them in the bed of a monster truck and do donuts in a parking lot, while they fall all over themselves, mindlessly laughing, crowing, getting bruised and blowing off steam. Pressure release is as important as study sometimes.
In the same vain, every couple of years my wife might yell, “Banana splits for dinner tonight!” and we all go to bed with bellyaches later. Because it’s fun.
So if occasionally I want to send my kids to school with cupcakes and an orange crush I will, whether government likes it or not. Because it’s fun. And I’m the Daddy, not them.
(Thanks to Diane Ellis, who always tips me off when I miss these stories in the news after I fall asleep on the Road To Serfdom)

When I was seven my father went to school with me and made me eat my chocolate milk and graham crackers in front my crying teacher and the school principal, explaining loudly and in some detail why I was free to eat what my mother had sent with me and that, until the communists did completely take over our country he had better never, ever hear again I'd been denied the right to eat my lunch because I wasn't having white crackers and regular milk like everyone else. Later I was proud I had a dad would stand up for my rights, even if I didn't understand what was going on at the time.

It is appalling that we have come to tolerate such authoritarianism in our once-free lives.

Your Dad did that? And made the teacher cry? God bless him - he's the hope of the Republic.

At last--I shall be free of the tyranny of nightly lunch-making! And think of all the money I'll save on plastic sandwich bags (so bad for the environment, anyway), juice boxes, and crummy character lunch boxes (made in China). I'll be able to afford those higher taxes!

About three months later they sent him home with his rifle and field pack, they thought the Russians were about to invade Alaska, we were at Elmendorf AFB, during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The crazy thing is, I seem to recall a study out saying that cafeteria food was less healthy for children.
Once again, the elites believe they know far better than us and believe they can feed our children better than we can by virtue of their own superiority. I grew up taking lunches to school more often than eating the school lunches, and I can almost guarantee the stuff my mother made was far better than the stuff dished out in the lunch room.

I have been bitter ever since my 5th grade class was banned from playing Greek dodge ball. A wonderful and popular game. The county-run school blamed the insurance companies, but I knew it was the first step on a slippery slope to a nationwide statist tyranny.

As a child who brought to lunch to school in a brown bag and put the offering under my desk. Without refrigeration or air conditioning in class, got pretty soggy...
Moving up to cafeteria food in High School was no better in the 60s, Yes I am one of those old folks... In short, if one wants to keep kids healthy and in place, give them the same menu Ms. Obama likes so well.. Ribs, burgers and such...
Then bring back all those risky sports as in meanginfull playground activities and sports to burn off calories and promoted physical and mental development.

I keep thinking something will finally get under so many skins the American people of all stripes will rise up and say “Hell no, I won’t go!” If this isn’t it then nothing will ever do it.

Watch Season 4 of "The Wire". It told me a lot about public education in the US. I recently bought "Waiting for Superman" - can't wait to watch that!
