Just got back to mid-town after a morning at the Guggenheim museum, where my boss, Rupert Murdoch, held a presser unveiling The Daily: a newspaper for the 21st century. He may drop a post about it later. Check it out for yourselves at www.thedaily.com

In his heart Rupert has always been a newspaperman, loving newspapers and refusing to give in to the pessimism about their future. The Daily is his very real answer to all those people whining about technology. It's based on an app you can subscribe to from the Apple store. It's hard to describe this even as a paper. The big thing is that it takes advantage of *every* technology -- audio, video, photography, text -- in an effort to change the way we tell stories. But you really have to look at it yourself to see what it does. Love to hear response.

Bill: Thanks for this. I should have already known about this. After reading your post I watched the video on the site and then downloaded the app and Tweeted your post. Note: I believe it's a free download and free usage for 2 weeks, after which it goes to 99 cents a week.

Bill, I've only had a few minutes to play with The Daily but I like what I see  The carousel makes it easy to scan for interesting stories, the photography is beautiful and the articles on the Egyptian situation well-written and informative.

The Daily seems to be an even higher-tech, more multimedia-friendly version of my reigning favorite iPad app, the WSJ, which broke my 34-year addiction to the ink and paper version of the nation's business daily of record.

I look forward to exploring The Daily and posting more impressions later during the two-week free trial.  In the meantime, kudos to Mr. Murdoch for this latest example of entrepreneurial creativity.

Just checked the App Store... as of around 2:00 P.M. Eastern Time, it has 207 reviews with an average rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Some comments from reviewers:

"I like the cost and feature ratio.  Good job!"
"Awesome news app."
"I am blown away by the content so far."
"Elegant, refreshing - fresh thinking.  This is welcomed with open arms.  Well thought through.  Thank you!"

Looks like the early returns rate it a winner.  Will give it a look.

Thank you Mr. McGurn.

Bill,

I hate to be a sourpuss, but for those of us who have not been blessed with iPad's as gifts or stocking stuffers, we are holding out hope for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Do you know if The Daily has plans for the PlayBook whenever it ships?

That said, the video is wonderful and I second the kudos to Mr. Murdoch.

It's gotta be compelling on other platforms, too: computers and phones aren't chopped liver!

Just downloaded the app.  Kudus to News. Corp for moving fast on this -- especially this little tidbit -- from Techcrunch:

Murdoch also revealed that the total cost to get the Daily up and running—the technology, the staff, everything—has been $30 million, and that operating costs are half a million dollars a week.

That's the sign of a great company: no matter how big it is, it's still run like a startup.  Inspiring, in fact, to those of us with our own little media startups!

Rob, I see that the app gives readers the ability to engage in live chat about stories with others.  Shouldn't that be directed towards Ricochet?

Yes!  But my guess is, that'll fade for them.  Here's how I see the difference:  on Ricochet, the community talks about what it wants to talk about.  The other way, the readers can talk to each other about stories that editors deem important.  I'm not saying one is better than the other, but there's room for both.

I hope.

Yeah, bad idea, anyway.  You'd probably have to ban me within the first week.

I believe that Verizon is making the first two weeks free -- check tomorrow's story for numbers. It's very hard to describe because traditional terms -- newspaper, news service, etc. -- don't really capture it.

Right now that News Corp has worked with Apple is the story, because there's nothing close to the iPad. Just as Apple has other news apps on its Apple store, I think Mr. Murdoch has made it clear that his goal is for his content to be on as many platforms as possible.

That said, don't think you're going to outdo the iPad for a while.

That's what I was afraid of. For some of us, its like finding out Darth Vader was really your father. I'll adjust.

BTW, took a bit to find it, but the subscription price is $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year.

Mr. Waldron, I know exactly how you feel.  The iPad is my first Apple product and, though I love it, there are minor annoyances about the product and MAJOR annoyances about Apple's proprietary systems.  iTunes is not intuitive and the whole system is so darn proprietary, it just makes it hard to deal with, especially if someone cut his teeth on Microsoft products as I did.  Microsoft has its problems, too, but it's much more open and, as far as I'm concerned, easier to use than the Apple software.

Is it just me and Bill on this one?  Anyone else?

Bill, if you're in Japan, it switches you to a Japanese version.  There is no option on the page to select English as your language preference.  Symantically, location and language preference are two different things.

Sorry Bill.  I stand corrected.  I had the wrong net address.

First heard about it when I stumbled upon their press release a mere hour before it came out in iTunes. Immediately downloaded it and love it.
