Santorum v. Romney, a brokered convention, the value of a liberal arts degree, and are men settling. All of these provocative topics plus a somber payoff of a bet are played out in this episode of America's most beloved podcast. Troy Senik, Meghan Clyne, Keith Urbahn, Diane Ellis, and guest host Maura Pennington hash it all out so you don't have to.  Note: image of Victor Cruz's end zone dance posted under duress.

Come on Keith, Mitch Daniels and Mitch Daniels are not the same!  It's not even close.

Take a minute to read this interview:

Sound like something Romney could pull off?

Good podcast, you should keep Maura. Any recent Ivy league grad who has the gumption to self-publish and dismiss a liberal arts degree is a gem.

Keith: Nixon was terrible. But you're right, he was much better than Obama. Tweet the good tweet.

Troy: We're all looking forward to that end zone dance like a GWB press conference.

Meghan: You're far too young to be so cynical. Try ignoring more stuff.

Diane: Did you lose the contest? That's okay.

Did it turn out like this?

Regarding the value of a liberal arts degree - I completed my undergrad in 1992, which was not a period of raging economic expansion, particularly in woefully anti-business Vermont.  I graduated with a classical liberal arts degree, Political "Science", and a minor in Econ (and anyone who skips the extra class to get the minor slapped onto their degree has wasted an opportunity).  Job pickings were horrifically slim for me, and it took me a rather long time to realize that the reason close friends of mine were getting good-paying jobs right out of college were a) they were willing to move, and b) they had business degrees.  I had trouble just getting interviews.  Frustrating as hell.

I went back to school in my late 30's to pick up an MBA, and I'm considering going back for another degree in Finance.  Since getting the MBA, my salary jumped 25% in the first job I took after getting the degree, and that base has gone up 13% in 2 years.  The reason?  The MBA.  As it turns out, math skills are things employers are willing to pay for, despite the less tangible value of a BA.

(continued):  I would also add that some of the arguments I heard on the podcast regarding the value of the BA or liberal arts degrees were the same ones made to me by instructors and other BA students while in college, and the same ones I made to myself after I was marginally employed and holding my BA proudly in front of me saying "But I can read and write really well!" to largely unimpressed HR directors.  The subject matter taught in the bulk of those courses involves reading, which is something you can do for free, at any time, anywhere - not for every degree, but for many of them.

While I think a second language skill is highly desirable, a degree in Spanish does not, in and of itself, suddenly provide a freshly-minted BA with any appreciable business skills, other than being able to speak, read, and write Spanish.  From recent demographic trends, there appears to be little shortage of that particular skillset, and pitching a 2nd language as your primary educational asset will only get you to the interview for a much small set of job openings, unless there's something else you bring to the mix.

At the end of the day I agree... in all seriousness, thanks for the feedback. Will keep it mind. Just slap me every time it comes out of my mouth.

I see what you're trying to do here.

But understand that it's much more humiliating for a woman to win a pie eating contest than to lose.

This is the first Young Guns podcast I can say I've enjoyed in a while. The recent ones have been lacking. A couple points . . .

I'm glad to hear a group of people finally express what I've realized (as a single person) for a long time: Marriage is a business relationship, not a love one. Dr. Laura, among very few others, has expressed for years that those fuzzies you get inside about someone are not the best feelings to follow when it comes to selecting a mate. In fact, those feelings only get people in trouble if they happen too soon.

I also agree with the poll that said many men "settle" when it comes to relationships and marriage. From a guy's point of view, I've seen too many good guys riding in on their white horses to save emotionally-damaged women. Women who these guys would never lend five bucks to BUT they'll marry them in an effort to show that men are good guys. And, of course, the only result can be a life of misery for the guy. I'm 41 and I still don't get it.

I always had a high opinion of Meghan, based on pragmatic things she said in earlier podcasts.  I am now wondering how she could be so evil....

Buck up, Troy.  We've got your back.

Sorry, it took a while to listen to this podcast; so there have been more villains and heroes since then, but... To the nice lady that praised Putin for quoting Lermontov (I didn't catch who it was) - let me put it in American context...

Imagine an American presidential candidate says "To quote Patrick Henry, 'Give me death'! ". Sure, Patrick Henry did say it, but would that politician be a hero in anybody's mind?

But that's how Putin quoted that very famous poem. It was another contemptuous moment where Putin took a very famous line about "troops died near Moscow defending Napoleon army" to "let's die near Moscow" supposedly defending from those who want fair elections.

Otherwise, loved the show!
