The Washington Post Gives Obama "Four Pinocchios" on a Tax-Cut Claim

"Within one month of me taking office," said President Obama in a recent Labor Day speech, "we signed into law the biggest middle-class tax cut in history, putting more money into your pockets."
"Obama's claim is ridiculous."
No, that response was not from Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity. It was from the Washington Post's "Fact Checker" column, which rated the claim "Four Pinocchios" on its truth scale.

That's just more nose for him along which to stare down at us.

I was just writing something about this myself. I tend to dislike these "fact check" pieces but redefining "big" to mean "broad" is a bit much.
I bet Team Obama is upset that no one remembers that $800 tax cut. I actually do, because I was happy to have that break. But frustration with lack of credit for that tax break should not translate into hyping it beyond recognition.

It was a buy off for those he could not specifically reward (through the unions) for his election. It was temporary and useless. A real "tax cut" would involve factoring it into the witholding and tax tables so people could plan on it as permanently non-confiscated income. The first year of it when the VA mysteriously deposited money into my checking account (I was receiving the GI Bill at the time) it felt like dirty money. It was just another way for the government to bribe us with our own money (and to bribe quite a few who pay no income taxes with our money as well.)

You are correct. There was no "cut." The withholding numbers were manipulated so that every taxpayer received what amounted to an advance. Our paychecks saw a minor increase in net income, but the bump was wiped out when we reconciled our taxes for the year. In one hand, out the other.
