The Wall Street Journal, the Delaware Primary, and What Happens Next
I spent most of yesterday in taxis and airplanes, returning from New York to California, got home, unpacked, realized that my cold or flu or whatever it was had morphed into a fever, and went to bed, my thoughts about various matters—including, particularly, the meaning of Christine O’Donnell’s victory in the Delaware GOP primary—unformed and chaotic. After 15 hours of sleep, I not long ago rolled out of bed. Over a cocktail of coffee and antibiotics, I opened the Wall Street Journal…to discover that, while I was asleep, the editors of the editorial page had figured everything out.
Today’s lead editorial: “The Tsunami Heads to Shore.”
[T]he GOP is likely to suffer no more losses. Now the huge wave is roaring…directly for the Democrats who are running American government…
The challenge now for Sarah Palin, South Carolina GOP Senator Jim DeMint and the tea partiers who endorsed Ms. O’Donnell is to show they can deliver seats in the Senate rather than merely conduct an intra-party cleansing…The challenge for the GOP establishment, meanwhile, is to focus on feeding the tsunami rather than engage in recriminations over who lost Delaware…
The real story of this election year is that the voters are massing to repudiate two years of the most liberal governance in two generations. It is Mr. Obama’s agenda that has polarized the electorate and set off this voter backlash….The tsunami is about seven weeks from shore, and the only question now is how many Democrats it washes out to sea.
Perfect. Just perfect.

I wholeheartedly agree with you and the Journal.

Tsunamis don't typically repeat every six years, let alone two years, so it also helps to have a rock-solid candidate, a candidate that will grow in stature. I wouldn't call O'Donnell rock-solid, and I don't think she'll grow in stature. I hope I'm wrong.

Re: The Wall Street Journal, the Delaware Primary, and What Happens Next
I'm thinking of all the remarks about 'competence' and how O'Donnell is just not 'competent'. So, how does one become 'competent.'? Well, a person has to plan for years; she has to make lotsa the right 'contacts' and she must avoid any mistakes that will haunt her on youtube. She must connive and at all times, in public, present a 'perfect' front. She must measure each remark, and do so for a loonnnngggg time. And at the end of time, she will be 'qualified' to be supported by her political party.
That kind of person is exactly the kind of person who will never ever question the status quo, because she IS the status quo!

See Joe Miller of Alaska. We're a nation of 300-million-plus. There's no excuse for us not putting forward absolute gems. Why can't we?

Okay, I give up. On November 3rd we'll know who was correct. I can wait.

As Al Davis said, "Just win baby!"
This is the contest that matters.

I hope you're wrong, too, etoiledunord. Man, I hated writing that! I don't want to think you're wrong... :-(
Aaaanyways, in my unicorn filled fantasy land which I often turn to in times of stress, O'Donnell wins the seat, she votes fantastically conservative, she spearheads the move to abolish Obamacare, and she gins up support in the Senate for massive government cuts. Oh, what else? Yes! She is instrumental in smacking down Cap & Tax forever!

Peter, you say you were traveling all day yesterday, so maybe you didn't follow the Mike Murphy thread (you couldn't have done much else)? The Ricochet community is a little restive on this subject, Everybody is fervent and everybody is right. Its become more theological than political.

On the other hand, the absolutely perfect person did not run against Mr. Castle. And she won the contest. Perfection. It's such a difficult thing to achieve.

"I spent most of yesterday in taxis and airplanes, returning from New York to California, got home, unpacked, realized that my cold or flu or whatever it was had morphed into a fever, and went to bed, my thoughts about various matters..." Peter, get well soon! Besides it being sad to think of you miserable, we've been missing your gentle Pooh-Bear touch around here lately.

Re: The Wall Street Journal, the Delaware Primary, and What Happens Next
It is perfect, just perfect! Bravo Wall Street Journal.
The O'Donnell breakout reminds me of the old refrain I used to hear as a young boy when asking for a job.
"Do you have any experience?"
"No".
"Then I can't hire you."
"How do I get experience?"
Cheshire cat smile from employer. Message? The job requires a hidden qualification you'll never find out about.
Christine O'Donnell can't be trusted by the establishment GOP to keep her mouth shut about what really goes on in D.C.; or to clam up about where all the bodies are buried, if she were to be around long enough to find out.
Re: The Wall Street Journal, the Delaware Primary, and What Happens Next
Amen, Peter: now is the time for all good men and women to come to the aid of their party.
And sorry to hear you're still under the weather! As always, I recommend vigorous exercise.

Don't worry, River. Give her a couple of years in DC and she'll be just like the rest of 'em. Believe it or not, Orrin Hatch used to be a rock-ribbed conservative...

Re: The Wall Street Journal, the Delaware Primary, and What Happens Next
The brilliance of such pithy commentary (I mean the Journal's, not you guys :-o) makes it vividly clear why I am an amateur. I concur with Peter - perfectly stated.
To introduce another metaphor, the Tea Party movement has succeeded in shifting the weight of the national conversation. Republicans - all of us - can either resist that shift and injur ourselves in the process, or - jujitsu-like - we can leverage that weight shift to throw our adversary.

Just checking around for the first time today and that gave me such a good laugh I'm going to suspend my boycott of this topic for 30 seconds to offer a "bravo." Hilarious, Trace.

I've got to assume that he missed the Murphy tread or he would have come in with "People, people, people..." Rob was left as the sweet voice of reason.

Re: The Wall Street Journal, the Delaware Primary, and What Happens Next
Yep. Despite my profound concerns with her character, I just sent her 20 bucks with a note to spend it wisely and with words of encouragement. Don't let us down, Ms. O'Donnell.
For anyone who's interested: P.O. Box 3987 Wilmington DE 19807
Also, Dick Morris on Hannity: Spending is the one and only issue this election cycle. Voters--even moderates and liberals--will be willing to overlook what they judge to be extreme or even repulsive stances on social issues in exchange for authenticity and reliability on spending.
Ms. O'Donnell and all our candidates need to hammer away on spending and keep the other stuff under the radar.
