The UN Wants YOU...
Or at least Rob and Denise.
Who knew? apparently the U.N. has taken a look at Hollywood and deduced that we need more advocacy in our films. Just like this august body to cut to the heart of the problem.
“Usually I speak to prime ministers and presidents, but that has its limits” said U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who arrived in Los Angeles on Monday for a high-profile Tinseltown outreach effort. “Movie producers, directors, actors — they have global reach.”
Ki-moon will sit down for a conversation with actor Don Cheadle before several hundred entertainment industry invitees at a “Global Creative Forum” Tuesday at the Hammer Museum.
The day-long gathering will feature panels titled “The United Nations and Hollywood for a Greener and Better Planet,” “Making Global Warming a HOT Issue” and "Empowering Women and Protecting Children for a Safer World.”

Agitprop returns.

Re: The UN Wants YOU...
First projects: remake The Grifters and The Sting, with the UN starring as the con artists--the casting would be completely natural.

When was the last time the UN had a General Secretary who wasn't a total buffoon?

Dag Hammerskold--killed in a plane crash on a peacekeeping mission in Africa in 1961. I think he was a man of the left, but he appears to have at least been serious.

No, it didn't go away. They want Hollywood to redouble its efforts.

It's easy to be pro-environment in Hollywood.
I live in Iowa. What has the environment ever done for me?

More advocacy in movies? Have they been to a Hollywood film lately? it seems like every time I turn around I'm getting a lecture! Especially when I'm watching with my 12-year-old. The indoctrination begins early.

I can hardly wait for the new movie posters - like the idealized couple standing in a wheat field, with the movie title in Cyrillic characters..........

So dumb...
Re: The UN Wants YOU...
What? There was a meeting of "high-profile" Tinseltown figures and I wasn't invited?
Actually, that's maybe by design. I went to an event two years ago at the USC Annenberg School of Diplomacy -- I appeared on a panel about "Celebrity Diplomacy" and one of my fellow panelists was a UN official. Honestly, I was tired from a long night of shooting a pilot, and I just didn't have an ounce of diplomacy in me. So I went on a long (and, to me, enjoyable) rant about the pointlessness of celebrity advocacy -- it didn't stop the genocides in Darfur, Yugoslavia, Rwanda, etc. -- and the pointlessness of the United Nations. The UN guy was horrified.
So if they're keeping a list of do-not-invites, I'm certainly on it.
And what's hilarious, to me, is that the world isn't watching Hollywood films anyway. They're watching Bollywood films.

So, Robaire, when do you begin work on Waterworld II? The first one was such a hit I'm surprised AlGore hadn't commissioned a sequel before this.
Re: The UN Wants YOU...
I had the unique pleasure of being in attendance at this event (the first half of it anyway) and believe me, it lived up to expectations (Rob, you in particular missed out, as Larry King moderated the celebrity panel). Don Cheadle -- seemingly a decent and thoughtful man, who has done good work in relation to African genocides -- admitted to attempting to smuggle subtle political messages into his films anytime he could. Ban Ki-moon declared the threat of climate change so serious as to be "beyond democracy". And -- best of all -- the Secretary General regaled us with stories of his "extensive" conversation with Colonel Gaddafi yesterday -- results still forthcoming. This after stating that though events in the Middle East were serious, he thought Hollywood's influence on global affairs justified him making the trip out west -- as if a dime's worth of difference would result from him staying put in the Turtle Bay home office.

So ... democracy is for the less serious stuff? When we're dealing with minor issues?
I'll second the motion: Out. Out of the UN. Out now. Now!

Mr Moon perhaps has not thought out the, ahem, ethnic ramifications of this project.

Re: The UN Wants YOU...
Ban Ki-Moon is Korean. You'd think if any ethnicity would realize the horrors that result when politicians declare a crisis "beyond democracy" it'd be a Korean.
