1 - Does the UN needs a live Webcast ?

2- I love the sense of urgency of the proceeding, it is like they are actually going to do something meaningful about it.

The guy from Morocco just went on for ten minutes and I have not a clue what he said, except that he wants God to bless those who have been killed.  Oh, and he wants all members to spare no effort to do something that might be good. (I think).

The guy from France is really P.O.ed at Russia and China for their vetoes.  This is the most un-feckless Frenchman I've heard since De Gaulle.

The US representative speech is kind of strong, stand in strong opposition to Russia and China, including ''we are disgusted'', ''these two members are shielding a brutal regime murdering women and children''.

Are US stance always this strong ? I was thinking that it would be watered down appeasement or is it blank bravado ?

Rice was outstanding. And obviously genuinely furious.

I believe that for every drop of rain that falls, the Pakistani representative has a sentence.  A long sentence.

The representative from Pakistan is either confused or trying to confuse me, how can these three phrases be part of the same discourse : ''Doing like Ponce Pilates is a shame...'', ''however we are against any infringement, even has we sympathize with the dead'', and the most absurd ''both sides must stop violence'' ?

I know that Ms Claire made a great post saving us time on Syria, so I am in no illusion that the opposition will try not to make a Libyan style homerun -massacre of Christian and Allawites included- if chance be given, but isn't it absurd to call for restraint on the side which being massacred ?

Wow, she actually used the word "liberty" -- thought it had been dropped from the Obama Admin lexicon.

What is the point (ever) of consulting the UN on matters of state violence ? I understand you may have some familial investment in the institution, but please don't let that fog your vision of the thugs in silk at Turtle Bay. Kabuki doesn't begin to explain what happened this morning. Rice being exercised about something beyond a sale at Barney's might have been surprising, but then it could be the invite to the Super Bowl Party at Daniel that Christine Lagarde is throwing. Assisting the French in an attempted block on the pass thrown by the Russians will be remembered tomorrow as they root for M. Bundchen.

My goodness I just came in to watching this...and am hearing the Syrian ambassador, the man is shameless.

He actually said "would any one believe a rational government be engaging in massacres against their own people on the eve of a security council meeting", or something to that effect....the man said that with a straight face...

Claire and others:  I'm interested in your thoughts.  A major problem with the UN is that it allows Ambassador Rice to be "outstanding" and "genuinely furious" without the need to back up the fury with action. I am a major skeptic about Obamian foreign policy, but even I give them the benefit of the doubt on Syria.  The problem, however, is nothing ever seems to happen whereby American power is projected in order to force solutions.

In a sense, Rice's indignation is like a "Free Tibet" bumper sticker.  You get the advantage of being for something good without the obligation to actually do anything.

Rasa, I think thought the US and Europe can still level unilateral sanctions, and if we are serious about making Assad pay  we can start using the CIA (or maybe the ATF) to run guns and ammo to the rebels and give them a fighting chance. The later we will have to do covertly, but we can certainly increase the pressure diplomatically even without the UN.

Yes, in a sense. It shouldn't be seen as much more than that. But that said, I'd rather see bumper stickers that say "Free Tibet" than ones that say, "Tibet: Far away and not my problem!" Hypocrisy is the homage that vice pays to virtue, etc.

Claire:  You are, of course, right.  Tibet is a country occupied by the Chinese, and we should care (though there isn't really anything we can do).

Perhaps a better way to say what I meant it that there are gestures we all make in situations where we can do little or nothing.  My problem is with those who believe the gesture alone will actually solve the problem.
