Love Song

Nothing moves the heart quite like someone singing a song written by someone else about someone they love.

On this Saint Valentine's Day, won't you share your favorite love song?

Or perhaps you aren't the love song sort.  That's OK... At Ricochet we value diversity of opinion.  So please feel free to share that song that makes you want to scratch your eyeballs out with a butter knife.

Here's One That Fits Into Both Categories:

True Love, Pt. 2 by X.

My wife and I slam-danced to it at our reception. Relatives were not impressed.

And Pseud...thanks so much for sharing.  Ugh!  Reminds me of Bill Wyman and his bride.   Wasn't she something like 16 at the time he married her?

No, according to Wiki she was 21 when he married her - but he'd been "dating" her since she was 13 ... As bad as Jerry Lee Lewis.

"You Do Something to Me" - Cole Porter, 1929
You do something to me.
Something that simply mystifies me.
Tell me, why should it be
You have the pow'r to hypnotize me.
Let me live 'neath your spell.
Do do that vodoo that you do so well.
For you do something to me
That nobody else can do.

Troy Senik, Ed.

Great choice, perfectly described, Pseud. With a few exceptions ("Lay, Lady, Lay" comes to mind) I've always thought Dylan wildly overrated (he's the example par excellence of novelty being confused for profundity), but this is a beautifully pure love song. It's also had several nice interpretations in recent years, courtesy of Garth Brooks, Billy Joel, and Adele.

Pseudodionysius: Bryan Ferry cover of Bob Dylan's Make You Feel My Love. The song doesn't make me swoon. Its the song you listen to when you're drinking a single malt and staring out the moonlight window thinking of what might have been. · 3 hours ago

The problem with the vast majority of popular love songs is that they're either fueled by unchecked eros or rank adolescence (Taylor Swift, put down your guitar and go to class). Avoiding those two poles, I'd submit Ray Charles' rendition of "Come Rain or Come Shine" as an all-time classic.

Great choice, Gaby. I always thought it was a shame that record didn't get more traction. It deserved to be a #1 single. There are very few people who can write hooks like Stevie Wonder.

Gaby Charing: and the Stevie Wonder song As, sung by George Michael and Mary J. Blige.

"My Man" sung by Billie Holliday.  A melancholy love song about a man who lies and cheats on her, but she still loves him anyway.  Sort of how I feel about Newt Gingrich.

"Naimi"  John Coltrane.  Lovely ballad dedicated to his first wife.

When a romance begins, dreams are full of fancy.  The world is filled with endless possibilities.  As the relationship deepens, promises are made.  The years go by and those promises may have fallen prey to life and the unexpected.  Hopefully, a couple can look back, remember, and still find this to be true.

So many to chose from, but this is my favorite from Nat King Cole - "When I Fall In Love."

My current favorite is "Jesus Loves the Little Children" as sung yesterday while carrying her valentines to preschool.

I'm shocked.  No Patsy Cline, still the greatest female country singer of all time (despite her death at thirty in a small plane crash).  Her voice is incomparably pure.  Here she sings my favorite country song of all time, "Leavin on Your Mind."  This falls into the the "love gone wrong" category of love song.

Don't all country songs fall into that category?

Patsy did a rendition of "More" that I was going to use but the U-tube recording was lousy.  She had a great voice.

This brings me back to cover those crazy days in 1968, 9th grade, local cover band on stage, the final song, a ssslllooowww dance, at the Hastings House Gym, Beverly Farms, MA.  Around us were war protesters, hippies, Vietnam, drugs, race riots in nearby Lynn - an overwhelming cacophony of civil distress - it all disppeared amid the scent of sweat, shampoo, cheap Lily of the Valley perfume and nacent desire.  That was love in its purest form - innocent, sweet, intoxicating.
