The Truth Behind Obama's Approval Rating
Last week, our own Steve Manacek posed a great question:
How is it that Mr. Obama, after a year and a half of almost uniformly unpopular policies, with unemployment still at levels barely seen in a generation, with economic growth essentially non-existent, and having made a mockery of his “post-partisan” promise in record time, still manages to hold a 46-47% (Real Clear Politics average) job approval rating? I find this utterly baffling.
Well, this isn't an answer, exactly, but take a moment (thanks, Tim Carney) to ponder Rasmussen's latest:
Obama: Strongly Approve 24%... Strongly Disapprove 47%
Approval Index: -23... Total Approval: 42%…
Very nearly half of respondents strongly disapprove of the President? That's an ugly face masked by those decent approval numbers (which do seem to be slipping). Get the gory details from Rasmussen here.
PS. That's my bold above.

Re: The Truth Behind Obama's Approval Rating
That's the downside of being a post-American President. Most Presidents get 10 points for just conspicuously loving and showing pride in America, and the American story, but that's not something Obama can bring himself to do. I'd say that's the main difference between Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Clinton still loves America. Obama loves Obama.

Re: The Truth Behind Obama's Approval Rating
I think you're wrong here. Clinton was all about Clinton. That's why he was able to tack right in 1994 and that's what made him fight so hard during times of scandal.
If Obama loved himself he would do the same. No, he is a true believer in the socialist dream and he is willing to sacrifice himself and his presidency to the cause.
Every time you argue politics with a liberal, the one thing they will say to you again and again is that they are amazed how many people "vote against their own economic interests." They cannot believe that so many choose liberty over socialist redistribution.
Obama got in on sleight of hand and empty marketing, he knows he needs to change it in four years or it's over.

You're right, EJ, they do say that. There are books written on the subject, none of which seem to grasp quite how condescending that phrase is.

Re: The Truth Behind Obama's Approval Rating
First off, I view presidential approval polls as a scorecard of Media Bias.
It took Years of harping by the MSM to drag Mr. Bush down into the levels of approval that Obama achieved in 18 months.
Obama, unlike bush, receives the unquestioning support of the Mainstream Media. If Bush said there were 57 states, that would be PROOF to the media how stupid he is, when Obozo says 57 states we hear verbal pretzels created as to how tired the man was when he made that minor mistake.
10 points of the approval comes from media support effect upon those who are not really paying attention.
I'd bet another 10 points are people not wanting to sound RACIST to the caller from the polling place.
If Obozo were to receive the bush treatment I'd bet his approval would be in the low 20s.
