I was just catching up on the news, and this item caught my attention:

The Department of Homeland Security has sent out an internal alert warning that jihadist websites last week posted a "hit list" of American executives, officials and companies -- an alarming development that could mark the start of a new phase in terror plots ...

The DHS bulletin, obtained by FoxNews.com, described how posts on the Arabic-language Ansar al-Mujahideen forum discussed "specific targets" for potential attack. The discussion originated on a more secure Al Qaeda-linked site known as the Shumukh forum.

Success in branding.

I'm really ticked off that I didn't make the list.

How is it that this group of Schmucks never seem to ask themselves why it is that these targeted businessmen/women have created technology, wealth, and lifted the standard of living of so many; whilst they the pure Islamic fundamentalists only sit in the barren miasma of their intellect, producing nothing but death, misogyny, and misery.

Minds immured by the views of 9th Century CE, have not produced much technical innovation nor wealth in the period since then.

This is an interesting, serious question, and one that's been much on my mind in the past few days. Part of the answer is the eternal human willingness to believe that it's not that the theory is wrong, it's that it has never been properly applied (e.g., communism). Certainly you can find much support for the idea that this is, in fact, what many Islamists believe. A failure deeply to understand the West is also part of it. It is exceptionally difficult to understand foreign cultures or the systems of thought that produce them. This goes both ways: I see huge confusion among Westerners about what people in non-Western countries think, want, and believe. It doesn't surprise me that much that these schmucks simply don't understand what the West really is and has to offer.

Claire, they don't understand what the West has to offer until they need heart surgery, a Ferrari, or a blonde English hooker. Israel excepted, the whole or Middle Eastern society leeches off the west. These guys couldn't even extract their oil if it weren't for western engineers.

Bernard Lewis frequently points out that Islam is in a point of development where Christianity was in the 14th century. Being neither a muslim or fourteenth century Christian I can't say if this true. Probably an oversimplification. There were photos recently on Pajamas Media of the graduating classes at Cairo University over the past 40 years and it was mostly in the past 15 years I think that all of the graduates had switched from western clothing styles to muslim dress.

So the Shumukh forum isn't a Mideast discussion site for German jewelry?

Bill, were you trying to say, "Look at the Shumukh on that camel"?

It came out sideways.
