Running to replace the disgraced Anthony Weiner in the House of Representatives, GOP candidate Robert Turner is polling well--astonishingly well, really.  How?  By tying his Democratic opponent, David Weprin, to President Barack Obama.  From yesterday's New York Post:

Republican Bob Turner, running to replace Anthony Weiner in a heavily Democratic Queens-Brooklyn district, is urging voters upset with President Obama to deliver a stinging rebuke -- by supporting Turner over Democrat David Weprin.

Turner painted Weprin as Obama’s twin.

“It’s Obama-Weprin,” Turner said during a Post editorial-board meeting yesterday. “It’s Weprin-Obama. You want the status quo, that’s your guy.”

As a case in point, Turner pointed out that Assemblyman Weprin is parroting Obama’s proposal to hike taxes on the wealthy, many of whom run businesses that employ workers, during a sluggish economy.

Such a tax hike would be a job killer, he said.

“That’s the Obama agenda,” Turner said....

A recent Siena College poll on the Sept. 13 special election for Weiner’s seat found Turner trailing Weprin by only 6 points in a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans by 3 to 1.

It's still hard to believe Turner could pull off an upset here, but zowie.  A Republican candidate within just six points?  In New York City?  To me, this is even more striking than Obama's sinking approval ratings.

Next year's election is going to be a blowout. Conservatives have got stop worrying about who can win the general, and start focusing on who would best be able to enact a conservative agenda.

This is exactly why I am excited. Rarely does the first part of the Buckley rule get so much attention.

Peter, I'm just back in from my once every 3 days trip to my au couture stylist (I'm the hardest working cat in show business). Thank you for the mention. Do you recall the delicious line in Batman Begins where the Asian villain (can't remember his name but he was in Christopher Nolan's Inception as well) uttered the immortal line:

"Gotham must be destroyed" ?

And then, of course, Christian Bale tears the place up. Delicious irony. Perhaps Rudy Guliani can deliver a few twists of the rhetorical knife. I remember a great speech he made where he said:

"America can't implement Hillary's health care plan! Where would Canadians go for their first tier healthcare?"

How to benchmark? Would this be an even bigger shocker than Scott Brown's victory for the 'Ted Kennedy seat' in Massachusetts? At least in that example I assume there are a few red districts in Mass. In Weiner's Congressional district it's solid blue.

Oh come on, guys, it's not in the bag yet. There are so many ways our side can screw things up...and I love Peter's optimism, really, but there is no way Turner wins that seat.
