We have a commander-in-chief whose judgment elicits no respect from his commander on the ground, and a commander on the ground whose judgment is so bad that he would gripe on the record in, of all places, Rolling Stone. But we're stuck with the one. And as for the other, I doubt the Pentagon could find any replacement who would elicit the same loyalty among our troops, or possess the same wealth of operational knowledge. When the two meet tomorrow, then, a suggestion:

General McChrystal should offer his resignation.

And President Obama should decline it.

Since reading about that gaff, I've been thinking that if one of the greatest generals of all time (Patton) was removed during one of the greatest wars of all time (WWII) for poor choices of words in interviews and speeches, then it is certainly possible that Gen. McChrystal could be fired regardless of his command qualifications. And Obama is no Eisenhower.

If McChrystal is irreplaceable then that is the biggest problem of all.
