The Return of Baby Doc
Looks like my family's asleep (or not online, from my perspective the same thing), so I don't have any insight from them, but here's the reaction from Pooja Bhatia--a great reporter. Emily Troutman--also a great reporter--has video:
That hint of music at 0:57 sort of sums this up--surreal, incomprehensible, and creepy.
The word on Twitter, for what it's worth, is that everyone in Haiti believes he was "sent" by France and the United States to undermine Préval--I paraphrase, to uphold the Code of Conduct. There are rumors that Préval has resigned, but there are rumors of everything on Twitter. There are rumors, too, that Aristide will come back next. Like I said, there are rumors of everything.
Obviously, I have no idea what's really going on, but this seems about the right response: Ben Ali flees Tunisia, Baby Doc goes back to Haiti: Airlines considering announcing new Dictator class seats to meet demand.

Re: The Return of Baby Doc
Personally, I think Haiti is a hopeless basket case. But I am confident that Baby Doc will find a way to make things even worse.

This just goes to show that there is no situation so bad that it can not become worse.

Re: The Return of Baby Doc
Visiting my brother in Phoenix a few years ago, I found on his coffee table a copy of National Geographic published in 1921. The issue was primarily about Haiti. As I recall, the U.S. Marines had landed in 1915 amidst chaos to restore order. The issue provided an extensive overview of the history of the island nation since its slave revolt in 1804.
Most comforting was the assumption that finally after a century of successive conquests of bandit turned warlord despots, the Marines could leave with the road to democracy, liberty, and prosperity firmly established among the suffering Hatians.
Welcome back, Baby Doc. I am sure that based upon past experience that the welfare of the Haitian people is uppermost in your mind. Or, have you run through the fortune in Swiss bank accounts stolen from the island last time.

Re: The Return of Baby Doc
Hey, why don't we hold a telethon and raise a billion dollars to give them? We could have Presidents Bush and Clinton holding hands on TV begging for donations. Haitians in the background chanting Baby Doc. Confidence and competance are truly inspirational.

Re: The Return of Baby Doc
Graham Greene wrote that Haiti was the most evil place he'd ever seen. From what I gather, it's gotten even worse. Why not another round of Baby Doc?
