The Real Shame of the Democrats
Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was considered a rising star for the Democrats before a deranged man changed her life in the flash of a gun muzzle. Even before the shooting the party was hoping to run her for the Senate in 2012. Afterwards, they calculated that the sympathy vote would make her a shoo-in.
The AP reports today that the party is getting antsy about her progress in recovering from the assault. They seem to have decided she should run with no regard or compassion about what a rigorous state-wide race would demand from her.
Says the AP article, "Giffords has made remarkable progress in the last five months, with neurosurgeon Dr. Dong Kim describing it as 'almost miraculous.' Still, she remains a shadow of her former self. Pia Carusone, her chief of staff, told the Arizona Republic last week that Giffords can express her basic wants and needs, but has difficulty stringing together sentences to verbalize more complex thoughts and feelings."
Can you imagine the spectacle of haltingly delivered speeches, or worse, a debate with the GOP nominee? Can't they once think of her needs and what's best for her before they worry about the needs of the party?

Re: The Real Shame of the Democrats
The Democrats haven't exhibited much shame lately. All things considered, her condition still matches the status quo of many prominent dems. Godspeed her recovery, in peace and great care. Now, how about the law enforcement figures in her community that had the shooter in custody that morning ?

More importantly, what about her constituents who deserve to have a fully functioning representative. That would seem to be the higher imperative. It is tragic what happened to her, but she does not have a right to hold office. There is serious work to be done.

Dems are typical exploiters of people.

Re: The Real Shame of the Democrats
Agree. She is the victim of a horrible tragedy, but is certainly not capable of being a functioning Representative. I'm tempted to say that as she has "difficulty stringing together sentences to verbalize more complex thoughts and feelings" she is on par with Joe Bidden, but I have too much sympathy for her to make light of the situation. Only her neurosurgeon and caregivers would honestly know if her metal capability is intact but the ability to communicate is impaired. If that's the case, she could have a role in government developign policy or something behind the scenes that doesn't reuire verbal communication skills. Heartbraking, yes. But the constituents deserve a Representative who can relaly perform all her duties.

Re: The Real Shame of the Democrats
I think it's astounding that there is nobody in her family telling the party to stop.
These people really live politics, don't they?
I'm not going to use the term "Weekend at Gabby's".
I'm simply not going to do it.

Re: The Real Shame of the Democrats
You people do not appreciate Democrat Party sensitivity and restraint.
We're lucky the party leaders are not pressuring Joe Biden to drop off the ticket in favor of Giffords.
Re: The Real Shame of the Democrats
I pray that more compassionate advisers prevail and spare Representative Giffords the personal horror of having, daily, to display her diminished communications capability on a global stage.

Re: The Real Shame of the Democrats
Remember these are the same compasionate folk who turned Paul Wellstones Memorial into a Party Rally. To them political expediency trumps EVERYTHING.

Re: The Real Shame of the Democrats
Imagine having to be her Republican opponent. How do you play that? Go after her and crush her in a debate and come off like a bully or lay off and appear condescending?
It's like when they make those poor boys wrestle with girls in high school matches. A total lose/lose situation. Democrats are beyond any shame.

Re: The Real Shame of the Democrats
Ms Giffords is my congresswoman, and it is perfectly fine by me if her staffers run her office until she decides whether to run again at the next election.
Similarly, I think she should be the one and only person to make the decision to run for Senate, or not.

But are her staffers able to introduce legislation or cast votes? I'm sure there is a geat deal of work they can handle without consulting her, but certainly not every function can be properly handled. You might feel differently if you were in the midst of a timely innitiative or were lobbying for an important policy change and were put on hold while she recovers.
