On the eve of the Wisconsin recall, Obama campaign manager Jim Messina has a new message out for the president's supporters. In a video released yesterday, Messina says that everything about the presidential race has gone exactly as expected.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had people asking me about all of the polls they're seeing. I say the same thing to all of them: We knew this was going to be a tough race. And we knew that once Mitt Romney locked up the nomination, Republicans would get behind him and this race would be tight, just like we always knew it would be.

Reading between the lines here, Messina seems to say that he and his team always knew that they would know what they now know. Get it?

As many pundits have pointed out, the real news in the video appears at the one minute, fifteen second mark when Wisconsin shows up as a toss-up state on the campaign's electoral map. Who knew? Apparently team Obama did all along.

It fits the pattern.

Just add it to the list.

When a campaign has to assure supporters that it anticipated a problem, it's usually a sure sign that the campaign has no idea what to do about the problem.

That man is so very smart.  I bet he had great grades and SAT scores.

Neat Video! I always wondered what happened to Augustus Gloop after he fell in that river of chocolate.

I don't think it's unreasonable to claim that this was foreseen. Intrade never stopped believing it was going to be Romne and the Obama campaign consistently focused its attacks on him (go to attackwatch and similar sites and flick through the archives). It's normal for parties to rally behind the winner after a primary.

They have lots of ideas about what to do about Romney's success, although they recognize that the election isn't in the bag. If I were a Democrat, I'd want them to be of that view.

Why the need for this video? You don't reassure your supporters if they're already assured.

They're trying to claim confidence, based on the efforts of their ground game workers ... but then you realize that it's those very same ground game workers that they're struggling to reassure.

These guys are on Cloud Nine.

  • They want us to believe that North Carolina is in the bag ... you know, the same state that rejected gay marriage only to see Obama come out for it days later
  • They have a running series of failed campaign themes, each one lamer than the one before.
  • One minute they portray Romney as an out of touch rich guy ... then they follow that with a raffle to have dinner with Barry and the Prada Devil.
  • Need more proof? Someone decided to let Bill Clinton roam free. (By the way, did anyone check the intern pool?)

After this track record of campaign brilliance, it's obvious that the supporters are screaming "what the ----- is going on with this campaign?"

James, point well taken. I agree Obama's advisers must have assumed this race would be tight from the beginning. That said, if Messina and crew could have predicted how poorly their talking points would have turned out over the past couple weeks, I have to think they would have tried something different.
