dowd

In today's New York Times, Maureen Dowd, who, a year or so ago, remained as in thrall to Obama as anyone:

Obama is still suffering from the Speech Illusion, the idea that he can come down from the mountain, read from a Teleprompter, cast a magic spell with his words and climb back up the mountain, while we scurry around and do what he proclaimed.

O

The days of spinning illusions in a Greek temple in a football stadium are done. The One is dancing on the edge of one term.

The White House team is flailing — reacting, regrouping, retrenching. It’s repugnant....

Maybe Obama was not even the person he was waiting for.

The worm has turned.

Dowd is a rat leaving a ship.  Anybody that really thought of the man as good, never really thought hard enough.

Sure, she says that now. It's safe to criticize him now.

But come 2012, she'll be sucking up to him and demonizing the GOP opponents as often as possible.

Because as bad as Obama is right now, we can't allow the EVIL Republicans to get into power and change everything.

A lot of lefties are turning on Obama now;  usually they say "he's giving in to the GOP again" or "he's not fighting".  This from the people who excoriate the GOP for allegedly forgetting that politics is the art of compromise.

The real reason is that leftist policies have clearly failed, but they can't admit that even to themselves, so they blame Obama.

Maureen Dowd misses the point completely.  Like most lefties she assumes that the answer to all our problems is more government.  It's not that Obama couldn't deliver on the leftist agenda.  He did . . . with trillions of dollars.  The program didn't work because the entire raft of leftist theory is now revealed as demonstrably false.  So now she puts the blame on the man.  Hey, Maureen, it's the theory, stupid!

No matter how far left any politician takes the debate, the Left will continue to move the goals leftward toward a misty, distant ideal. They have no goal, merely the journey.

Right now, Obama is the center stage and those odd side stage acts are not eminent threats to the journey leftward. By the time we get to the conventions, the Left's endless reactionary fount of derision and bile will be reliably directed to the opposition again.

In the end, the Left will likely embrace the meme that the polity was not good enough for the One. I recall a lot of that when Jimmy Carter was run out on the rail for incompetence.

I seem to be saying this a lot today, but, once again, exactly.

Sisyphus: They have no goal, merely the journey. Well said!

By the time we get to the conventions, the Left's endless reactionary fount of derision and bile will be reliably directed to the opposition again.

Maureen has the meme in today's piece: "On the razor’s edge of another recession; blocked at every turn by Republicans determined to slice him up at any cost..." Poor, put-upon Barry. Not only beset by outrageous partisanship, let’s not miss the Left's insistent theme of intended physical violence by the Prez's political opponents . . . just waiting to “slice him” next time he’s at blade-distance. Get ready for endless gag worthy self-pity, allusions to physical violence and hyped-up racial bullying from Obama's amen corner.

In the end, the Left will likely embrace the meme that the polity was not good enough for the One. I recall a lot of that when Jimmy Carter was run out on the rail for incompetence.

Repeat after me: “I am not worthy of the One. I am not worthy of the One. . . .”

This assumes Obama is thick-skinned enough to take such Dowdian criticisms from his own side.  I'm beginning to think Mr. Chauvinist called it correctly shortly after Obama took over the job he often seems to despise:  it doesn't suit him; he won't run.

If true, the question is, what's the latest date he could wait to announce his decision?

Steyn's often-used dismissal of Dowd as "the elderly schoolgirl Maureen Dowd" is so .. cruel, but so perfect.

She had a crush. Now she's over it. On she'll go to someone dreamier still. Anyone with a daughter knows the drill (or a son, come to think of it).

Maureen Dowd, like a lot of lefties, thought that the pensive brow, the pursed lip, the knowing tilt of the superior chin was a means to a larger end. It wasn't: it was the end. Its over.

If I recall correctly, Rush used to play this clip of some of the reporters, early in the primary season, referring to his ears.  Obama complained that people had always made fun of his ears in school and objected.  Isn't Dowd the one on that tape saying, "We're trying to toughen you up for the election?"

I can't "like" this comment enough. I need a "super like" button, or something...

It's a smoke screen so he can tack right and hopefully perform some Clintonian triangulation. No matter how disappointed the left appears to be with Obama he is still their dream candidate. They will criticize him from his left flank so he can move right to chase the illusive swing voters. By being criticized by "those people" he looks more moderate than he really is, and it make whoever the Republican is seem further right, perhaps beyond the bounds of acceptability.

 Paules, great slogan!

"Obama, it's not the man, it's the theory...and it's just wrong."

Western Chauvinist,

"If true, the question is, what's the latest date he could wait to announce his decision?"

Maybe he should consult with Sarah Palin.
