The Newspaper of Record? Tee-Hee

A persistent liberal meme, often showing up in, among other places, the pages of the New York Times: That Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Sarah Palin and others constantly substitute mere entertainment and celebrity for serious commentary.
On the front page--the front page!--of today's New York Times:
George Clooney on Malaria
The actor George Clooney recently contracted malaria in South Sudan, and now he is answering reader questions about the disease [on theTimes website]....

Gin and tonics cure malaria, right?

How does George feel about using a little DDT to kill the mosquitos that infected him?
I think I know the answer.

Re: The Newspaper of Record? Tee-Hee
Ask him whether he has reconsidered the DDT ban.

I don't know about you all, but I can't help but cringe when Rush or Glen try to do a "bit". Rush has these inane, unfunny songs, and Beck insists on channeling Kermit the Frog whenever he inpersonates other people. No, I tune in (as long as I can stand to) for information and analysis. I turn it off when they make their feeble attempts at "entertainment."

I can only assume that malaria and/or George Clooney are somehow a huge problem for the greater New York metropolitan area.

Dear Doctor Ross,
I'll just come right and and say it instead of walking on fragile egg shells with you: get better -- stat -- so that you can get back to Progressive actvism. Physician heal thyself!
Best Regards,

Re: The Newspaper of Record? Tee-Hee
Tonic water, with or without gin, is not a cure. The quinine in tonic water helps you to be less susceptible, before becoming infected. Leave it to the British expatriates to add fizz (CO2, by adding soda water) and gin, to make taking quinine palatable.
Aa a child, around 1967, so about the time that Rachel Carson was writing "Silent Spring", I was in Laos as a grown man showed up at our front door. The man was in hysterics and showed up at our door, because he had accidentally inhaled and swallowed a mosquito. That man went back to the States and became a part of the people that went into hysterics when, "Silent Spring" was published.
Malaria is bad news, but i doubt that Clooney really has it. We'll see.
I played in flooded, mosquito-infested rice patties, everyday, but we took quinine tablets. I doubt he was not given quinine.

Good news George: The high fever from malaria cures syphilis.
BTW, I've had dengue fever. Maybe Ricochet can trump the NYT and have me answer questions...

You and Flownover beat me to this one. Don't know the actual numbers, but hundreds of thousands have suffered (and many died) from malaria since DDT was banned.
