He can order up a political assassination; he can sing "Blueberry Hill."

Well, he can sort of sing "Blueberry Hill."  Personally, I'd prefer it if he sang a little better and ordered up assassinations a little worse.  But as a piece of pure gangster theater, this clip has it all: a terrified audience applauding, atonal singing, and somehow -- despite the badness and the off-key warbling -- it's still a little menacing.  It's the kind of thing a gang leader does, right before he whacks his rivals.  It's the kind of thing Putin might do, right before he shuts off Europe's oil pipeline and demands Hungary back.

As for Putin, he rides motorcycles, shoots predators, fishes with his shirt off, now plays piano and sings.  He's ... well, a cult of personality perhaps.  Retirement for Putin?  Nah... · Dec 14 at 4:28pm

I'll take that over a President who rides sissy bikes, shoots hoops while the business of the American people goes unattended, fishes for compliments (I think they oughta be thanking me!), and plays the race card.

They've both got a cult of personality, but at least Putin isn't using it to peddle Marxism.

Clearly, there's something in the water out there.  Putin isn't the only, nor is he the first, nor is he the finest singing prime minister.  Totalitarianism:  the Free World sees your Putin, and raises you a Harper!

I'd love to see ahmadinejad, bush, obama, kim jong il, chavez, tony blair, and palin have their karaoke video on youtube.

Yikes, Ricochet!  Sometimes.... TMI!

Particularly egregious (although hardly distinctive) was the eagerness of certain Americans, who have prospered greatly in our capitalist, free market economy, to participate in this Soviet-style sing-a-long.

Within your context, I can definitely agree.  I wonder how Putin would do throwing out the first pitch?  My odds are on Putin. I wouldn't take the rest of his baggage, though.

Your Grace

The big guy in the black vest who is standing and clapping in time is the stuff of nightmares. You know he was checking out who else was on his feet for later discussion. "So, Vassily, you were too tired to get on your feet for the boss?"

Aaron Miller: What do you think of Putin, Sergei? Is he still basically a KGB administrator? What do you think he hopes to do with his power? And is there any reason to think he will eventually be forced out of power? · Dec 14 at 4:11pm

Aaron - I've been out of that neck of the woods for 35 years (lucky me!); so, I don't have first-hand impressions; still: a) he is a typical Russian boss, a law upon himself, expecting everybody to be plotting against him, believing only in force, stooping to propaganda when force does not work directly; caring nothing about the citizens, etc., etc. The masses in Russia LOVE him for being "strong", for "showing it" to America, etc. SO, he is, in fact, what the people want (I don't count a few million dissenters). He hopes to KEEP his power - nothing much more, I am afraid. He may be forced out of power, sure, but only by somebody who is more ruthless. Just my $0.02
