From a reader up in Canada, another link to a fascinating book on the connection between free markets and virtue, The Morality of Capitalism. This splendid little volume contains essays such as “The Moral Element in Free Enterprise,” by Friedrich Hayek, “The Bible and Entrepreneurs,” by Rev. Robert Sirico, and—Congressman Paul Ryan, call your office—“The Immorality of Government-Mandated Health Care” by Paul A. Cleveland. The entire book is just…there. Online.  Printable.  And free.

For Christmas tomorrow, you could do a lot worse than to give the link to some young socialist in your life who could still be saved.

Peter, your link doesn't seem to work. From the source code I get:

http://fee.org/wp-content/files/Religion-and-Capitalism.pdf

Can you please check it.

Claire Berlinski, Ed.

It works for me, but it's very slow to load: I think all of Ricochet is trying to open it at once.

Thank you, Claire, and Merry Christmas (if that's not inappropriate?).

Yeah, I'm seeing the book "Religion and Capitalism" too. Is that the right book? I thought I saw posted in another thread.

Of course it's not inappropriate. (This does remind me of wondering how to phrase a holiday invitation to a Benetton-ad-diverse group of friends here a few years ago; I finally decided on "We're having a monotheism dinner.")

Ah, you're right! Here's the correct link:

Thanks Peter and Claire, downloaded and saved!  I shall read it out by the lagoon (the S family is celebrating Christmas with family who conveniently live in Hawaii).

The older I get the less hope I have of ever converting a socialist…

On the other side of the coin of free-markets and virtue is the connection between socialism and individual/social corruption.  Concerning this, Claire Berlinksi gave a brilliant talk to the Heritage Foundation about her Thatcher biography and the Stepping Stones report.  As she spoke, I thought to myself, “Yes! This needs to be said. Yes! This is correct and this case needs to be made to the electorate.”   What do I find posted on the web but a clip of her talk which is characterized as extremist.  I watch this clip and I’m at a loss as to what’s wrong with it.

Things like this lead me to think that liberals and conservatives think so differently that it’s really hard to find common ground.
