The 'Miracle' That Will Guarantee Obama a Second Term
Note the scare quotes round 'miracle'. I don't like the idea of an Obama second term any more than you do. (* see note below). But for once I find myself in agreement with George Soros: despite Obama's best efforts to destroy the US economy through a devilish mix of money-printing, Porculus spending, crony capitalism and enviro-Nazism - not forgetting Solyndra and the cancellation of Keystone XL - he has been thwarted by the shale gas revolution.
Billionaire investor George Soros attributes part of his favorable economic outlook for the U.S. to the nation's shale resources, he said in a weekend TV interview.
"[The economy] definitely shows some signs of revival," Soros said on CNN's "Fareed Zakaria GPS. "Very important is the revival of shale gas and shale oil as a cheap source of energy which has made manufacturing more competitive [and] also the fact that you now had several years of no wage growth, so wage disparities have been reduced, and so all of this is bringing a very welcome relief."
(* Though actually, I do still think four more years of Obama hell would be preferable to four-to-eight years of Romney lame-duckery. Better to have the liberal brand TOTALLY discredited than to have another conservatism-discrediting David Cameron/GWB Mk II poisoning the wells for you...)

This. I thought the same, James, when O was elected. My thinking, at least we will be able to call them socialists and it will all be over, not realizing so many would actually approve (or be oblivious). Are you thinking your comment is sort of radical? It is not and is typical of conservatives unfortunately. Let's just let him win- we'll show them. I've been thinking about this and what would be radical (and effective) is a call for impeachment. It won't work! Not possible! He may not be impeached but a lot of dirt will aired, a chance to make a pitch for the constitution, and for once the Republicans will set the agenda instead of just being 'shocked'. It would distract the media all the way to the election. There's a place for respectability (no conspiracy theories allowed!) and long articles about liberties usurped (Catholics), but action is required too. Small business people understand this.

Let me translate for you, James - Five more years of Gordon Brown would have been preferable to David Cameron, because then Socialism would be totally discredited and the UK would be even more bankrupt that it is now. As there are no term limits in the UK, then ten years of Gordon Brown would discredit Socialism even more. 15 years, even more.
Then you could write a book to warn the US not to go down the same path. Oh, wait...

Oh, wait... wasn't George Soros the one who broke the Bank of England, which eventually led to Tony Blair and Gordon Brown?
And wasn't he also the one behind Mr Obama's rise to power?
It's almost like there is a Shadow Party, or something.

James,
This, it seems to me, is a shockingly ignorant preference. It seems as if your're saying that 4 more years of hard-left, socialist legislation, suffocating regulation, and appeasement abroad are bad, but not so bad that they all can't be washed away by the libertarian superman that will be elected in 2016.
What I believe is missing in your analysis is the likely permanence of much of Obama's statist actions. Obamacare, once fully implemented in 2014, will be very tough to repeal as the American electorate will be wary of any politician that tries to deny them of what they will see as a 'human right'.
Also, supreme court appointments are life appointments. 'Nuff said.
James Delingpole:

The idea that liberalism can be "TOTALLY discredited" is balderdash. Like Wilson and Fukuyama and their naive predictions of a future that is beyond war, your assertion that liberalism can be vanquished is fantasy. Liberalism is a product of human nature.

Completely disagree. With four more years of Obama, the Left will entrench itself so that it may never be displaceable.
Nonsense. Obama has proven himself politically inept. He is the nail in the liberal coffin. Remove that nail and a new liberal dracula will emerge. Let this man bury liberalism so we can all move on.
Besides, we have to feel this way... he's gonna win. · 1 hour ago
If he's so politically inept, why is he gonna win?

Right on target. The American system does not make it easy to undo things (and no, we are not going to be able to throw out the whole system and come up with something better). Giving him four more years cements what has been done and broadens the window of what is politically acceptable.

Because the GOP seems content to nominate Obama-lite, and Obama will eat Romney for lunch when the real campaign gets going.

Yes! The whole Obama program has been focused on giving more taxpayers' money to people who will vote for the "liberal project" in order to keep the goodies coming. People (well, 90% of them) will not vote for a candidate who might pull the plug on the freebies. We are probably doomed now. After four more years of Obama, we surely will be screwed.

Re: The 'Miracle' That Will Guarantee Obama a Second Term
In 2008, I told numerous friends that maybe a complete sweep by Obama and the left would be preferable to McCain and the continuation of the long, gentle 75 year slide into serfdom. The result would be a totally discredited left and a true renaissance (which the Reagan "revolution" wasn't.) History shows that a peaceful return to freedom from authoritarianism is uncommon.
Unfortunately, things haven't yet gone far enough and, the truth is, it's not just about the left; it's really that the US has left its heritage of freedom and embarked on the downward path to the sewer of the welfare state.
The reason that Congress seems feckless and can't reduce the size of government isn't because it disregards the will of the people, it's because Congress is a finely tuned democratic machine that reflects the will of the people. The direct election of senators is one of the reasons that 1913 will be marked as the true beginning of the downward spiral.
I'm afraid this country will have to come close to destroying itself so that it can possibly be rebuilt. The odds are not good.

James, While I share your viewpoint that the "serious" Republican field is not capable of reversing our course to the degree required at the speed required - I simply can not abandon all hope.
1. Keep in mind that the country with the largest debt problem (Govt.+household+industry) is the UK. You will go down the bond vigilante tubes slightly before the USA if current trajectories are maintained.
2. While I admit that with or without Obama, we will not make it 4 years before hitting the wall, at least with a Republican the wall may be slightly weaker.
The only one addressing the domestic issues with the seriousness required is Ron Paul. I am just about at the stage where I would prefer to have his domestic orientation, in spite of his idiocies on foreign policy (and I live in Asia and would be directly affected) to any of the alternatives. Depressing.
