The McCotter Meme
A friend of mine, remonstrating with me for my obsessive picking over the GOP presidential field, recently reminded me to put not my faith in princes, but only in the Lord. And listen, if the Lord were running, I would be first in line at the booth, so help me. But until that time, I can't stop wondering: who can topple Barack the Giant Osama Killer before he goes on to kill the economy and the Constitution as well?
Now I'm suddenly hearing the name of Michigan congressman Thaddeus McCotter. This may be because he has a book out, or possibly it started with a recent column by the lovable SE Cupp in The Daily News. SE dubbed him the Guitar Hero because he plays in a garage band - and since then, the McCotter idea seems to be making the rounds.
I know Thaddeus a bit and like him muchly. And in fact, I've greeted him once or twice with, "Hi, Thaddeus, run for president!" Here's SE's description:
He is unflinchingly conservative, an unapologetic defender of American exceptionalism and the war on terror; he prizes good works over big promises. He was one of 59 Republicans who voted against House Speaker John Boehner's last-minute budget deal with Democrats, making him a favorite among Tea Party voters.
He championed the Iraq surge and hammered Obama for ignoring Iran's Green Revolution, before either were popular arguments. And unlike so many Republican alarmists, he believes the ingenuity and faith of the American people assure that our best days are ahead of us.
He's also quirky and cool and funny and makes a great guest on Red Eye. Anyone else have an opinion on this?

Re: The McCotter Meme
He is very funny. Like Reagan, his humor is also genuinely self-deprecating (the true test to make sure he's not a Republican version of Obama).
I don't know if he's presidential material, but I'll take him right now over Gingrich or Huckabee.

Re: The McCotter Meme
Ah... your friend isn't a Huckabee supporter, by any chance?
Oops, I misread his advice as "put not [your] faith in principles, but only in the Lord".

Re: The McCotter Meme
McCotter is a good guy, but, his conservative credentials tend to take a back seat to automotive carve outs. He is from Michigan. Of course there are no perfect candidates and I would probably vote for Toonces the driving cat over President Obama at this point.
Re: The McCotter Meme
Thaddeus McCotter on Uncommon Knowledge right here.
(You couldn't have supposed I hadn't already interviewed him, could you, Drew?)

I have been following T-Mac since Aug 2004: http://milkchaser.blogspot.com/2004/08/thaddeus-mccotter.html
I think he is Lincolnesque.

Re: The McCotter Meme
We insomniacs were introduced to Rep. McCotter long ago on Red Eye and have wondered why his name never appeared on anyone's A List for the White House. Since the Clinton years I've conceded that national politics is mostly show business, so a truly witty, composed, self-effacing, razor-sharp, likeable guy like McCotter might be exactly who Republicans should put up for bid, regardless of any chinks in his conservative armor. I think a debate between McCotter and Obama would be one of the most entertaining events in modern American politics.

Re: The McCotter Meme
Hmmm. I've from Michigan, and placed somewhere near the 115th percentile when it comes to political awareness, but I've never 'eard of 'im.
UPDATE: yikes! I just looked it up: I live 5 miles from his district. If I don't know this guy, nobody knows this guy. This is a problem.

I'm actually thinking of moving two blocks over so I will be in his district. Right now I'm represented by the loathsome Sander Levin.

Re: The McCotter Meme
I've been listening to McCotter's interviews on the Dennis Miller show regularly for at least a couple of years. He makes Miller laugh out loud nearly every time. Very witty guy.

Re: The McCotter Meme
I watched Rep. McCotter's interview on Uncommon Knowledge and was mightily impressed. I was again impressed with McCotter when I saw his response on the House floor to the Iranian uprisings of 2009. Shortly thereafter I sent for his Wide Awake pamphlet, and I just finished his book Seize Freedom.
This is a thoughtful, humane and principled man, and I think he has what it takes to become a national figure. If he would run for national office this time around, which I doubt, I would happily campaign for him.

When SE Cupp, Greg Gutfeld, and Dennis Miller all like a guy, it's hard to argue with that. I'm with Tabula; I don't know if he's presidential material, but he's better than some of the other guys we're looking at.

One more impression: during the whole Skip Gates/police "acting stupidly"/"beer summit" debacle, McCotter introduced a resolution suggesting that Obama retract his comments about the police officer, on the grounds that such a statement could impair the officer's legal and professional standing in any possible court action.
McCotter appeared on Chris Matthews' show to state his case for the resolution, and acquitted himself admirably. I had never before seen Matthews reduced to such docility while trying to skewer a republican. He just couldn't lay a glove on McCotter, and was reduced to being civil to his enemy for a change.
