The Karl Rove Mystery Deepens
He is not onboard. Rumor has it that he debarked in Tallinn. They say he was staying at my hotel, but that I somehow missed him. You would think it impossible for me to miss him, since there are only about five people in all of Tallinn and Karl Rove is not exactly someone one would fail to recognize. But I suppose there's a reason for his reputation. Somehow he managed not to find himself stuck in an elevator with Claire Berlinski and her checklist of of Ricochet's most urgent questions. Not many political operators are shrewd enough to pull that off. Chapeau, Karl.
Bonus fact: I wandered down a ship corridor that I don't think I was supposed to wander down today and learned something that I bet you didn't know. The code for "mass casualty" on a cruise ship (all cruise ships or just this one? I don't know) is "Quebec." If they start saying the ship is about to dock in Quebec, there's an even bigger problem, apparently, than a captain who got very, very lost. I don't think passengers were supposed to see that information. I also learned the code words for "bomb" and "man overboard." No, they didn't have a code word for "E. Coli Outbreak."

And if you're in a hospital and you hear them page "Dr. Strong," it means they're summoning Security to quell a disturbance. On Greek-flagged and -crewed cruise liners, the signal to the passengers that the ship is sinking is the sight of the officers and crew departing in the lifeboats.

....I mean, not that there's anything wrong with that. If you're Karl Rove, you can do whatever dance you want and all. All I'm saying is, inquiring minds want to know....

On the NRO cruise, Rove arrived in secret as well, and left without a trace. No helicopters, either. I believe he was dropped overboard in a shroud with a breathing apparatus, picked up by a sub crew, fitted into an empty torpedo casing, and shot to an underwater base the RNC picked up cheap from SPECTRE back in '72.

My bet is that Karl Rove had heard that you had been instructed to ask him about his Manchurian Candidate. Being a political Svengali, he disappeared.

Years ago, I was working at St' Judes Children's Hospital when I heard an overhead announcement: "Paging Dr. Moneymaker, Paging Dr. Moneymaker". I think he was an endocrinologist on staff but when I heard it I wondered if it might be code for "Attenion all doctors, a hypochondriac with insurance has arrived in the ER".
