The Homophobia of the Left
The left often runs out of ideas. And the ideas that they have, they have a hard time defending. As Jonah Goldberg chronicles in The Tyranny of Cliches, the left has divorced itself from history, thus they can claim to be the party of civil rights, etc, because they have no concept of their own ideological history. Why are so many on the left so infatuated with socialism, for instance? Because they simply ignore socialism's actual history.
The left views itself as enlightened. Madonna recently intoned that "y'all better [expletive] vote for Obama...a black Muslim in the White House...he's fighting for gay rights."
Her so-called (later self-declared) sarcasm aside, Madonna's entreaty to vote for Obama because he's "fighting for gay rights" appeals to the left's widely-held belief that they are the party "for" gays. What has Obama done? Well, mostly he "repealed" don't ask don't tell, which had been signed by... Bill Clinton (a noted right winger...oh wait).
So now we come to the picture that greeted me on my Facebook newsfeed this morning, posted by a liberal Facebook friend of mine (a guy who claims to be a moderate because he voted for Scott Brown in 2010, but who is voting for Warren this time around and consistently takes very liberal positions).
"Don't you think that's kind of homophobic?" I asked.
"Nope. How is it homophobic?" He replied, either unable or unwilling to examine the question.
How is it homophobic? Well, I put it to you that this image was not created by one of Mitt Romney or Paul Ryan's fans. Therefore, it was created by someone who doesn't like them. Therefore, whoever created it wanted to make them look bad. So hence they are made to appear to be kissing. Whoever made this image is equating men kissing with something bad. And they are trying to leverage that feeling in others to persuade others not to vote for Romney.
The left, Democrats, the party of tolerance.

So when you put that to him, what was his reply?

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
No reply. But his brother wrote, "Well, I guess Ryan really has Mitt's back." Which I also think is kind of homophobic.

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
The title of this week's Goldberg, Long, Podhoretz podcast refers to a Chris Matthews fantasy about Romney and Ryan. I think that sort of fits with your premise.
And it's part of the same mindset we saw in John Kerry and John Edwards when they both kept referring to "Dick Cheney's daugher, who is a lesbian (implied OMG!)" during the debates, as if they hoped that would frighten conservatives away.

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
I guess your friend is not very accepting of the straight lifestyle. Some men actually enjoy kissing someone without a five o'clock shadow. Maybe a few month of sensitivity training would help him see how others live.
Seriously, what bothers me the most is someone somewhere thinks this is funny, a real riot. How sad!

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
I'd wager the idea isn't to make R/R look bad but to make supporters feel bad. See, we're all supposed to be hugely homophobic over on the right. So if we see a picture of our top picks kissing, we'll run screaming into the night, terrified at the horrors presented us. We'll be so mentally short-circuited by this challenge to our tiny intellects that we'll probably not even manage to vote. In short, the designer is attempting to hoist us by our own petard.
My immediate thought upon viewing the image was to note the Photoshop problems (good choice for Ryan, not so good for Romney - the hands are jarringly wrong in comparison to the heads). Then I drifted to, "They're RUINING those suits!" Lastly, I wondered how long before Mrs. Ryan beats up Mr. Romney for trying to steal her man. I'd put my money on her, kthx.
I'm assuming that is NOT the reaction the instigator was hoping for...

I remember when Kerry did that in the debate. I mean, she's out. So its not like he outed her. But Kerry was trying to play to that tiny population of troglodytes in the election who didn't know and it would change their vote.
And I found it disgusting.

I don't even get what the point of it was. The people whose vote it would affect and who would be willing to vote for a guy who got in trouble with his church for being a pro-abortion zealot has to be negligible.

Voter suppression. Those people watching the debate in their stained wife beater with an open can of Utica Club in their hand who would hear that and say "What? Dick Cheney has a gay daughter? Well, I ain't votin' for her!"

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
....and the Left looks out for the "Little Guy", unless Joe the Plumber asks Obama a question. Obama Supporters pride their fearless defense of Free Speech. After all, they demand the Cher have the right to say "f***" on prime time television, while they cheer on the arrest of James O'Keefe and Nakoula Basseley Nakoula. They're First Amendment purists when it comes to a Victory Mosque being built on Ground Zero while supporting Egypt's demand for Blasphemy laws.
For almost a half century, the media has given the Left a pass. This is what happens when people aren't held accountable for their actions.

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
Last month the liberal media thought conservatives should be "shocked" at the fact that Paul Ryan once dated an African-American. At the time I commented:
"In the mind of liberals, conservatives and Republicans are all racist . . . So to them, promoting this story about Ryan will cause conservatives to turn away from the Romney-Ryan ticket and write in Pat Buchanan. Seriously."
Now we can just replace "racist" with "homophobic." To your friend who said, "How is it homophobic?", would he consider a picture of Romney in blackface to be racist?

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
Here's a take: the leftists (especially pundits) project their own self-loathing or their own flaws onto the conservatives; thus we have Albert Arthur's homophobia example from a lefty, and you can add this bizarre example of Chris Matthews thanks to dailycaller.com:

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
I hate the term "homophobia"-- the tactic of making a psudo-psychological diagnosis of people for disagreeing with you and stopping there is a good sign you got nothin' else, and would be dangerous given power to boot-- but yeah. Not news to me, I've been called every gay slur under the sun for being a right-winger, and I'm pretty sure that's not an odd thing. That and misogynistic insults are pretty go-to; if someone happens to be a minority and conservative... yeah.

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
Uh, hello. Teabaggers? They use a gay slur to insult an entire conservative movement. The insinuation is obvious from liberals, conservative = gay = bad.

Not for nothing, but since when was "teabagger" a gay slur?

Buck up everybody, have we lost our sense of play ? We need to get Iowahawk into the campaign and let Mitt run riot over these prigs.
Doesn't it feel like liberals are the new starched shirts ?

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
guys:
Look, I'm no liberal but the photoshop is meant to be a joke and call out republican hypocrisy. The idea is that, even though r & r may support straight marriage, etc., they really are gay. Aren't they hypocrites? It's not a very good joke, but it's not slurring gays. It would be like us doing a photoshop of Obama--savior of the downtrodden and working/middle class--golfing at some fancy club. But hey, we don't need photoshop for that!

Re: The Homophobia of the Left
Now I finally understand why men like seeing beautiful girls kiss.
Joking aside, this bromance is silly - can you photo shop Obama and Biden having a nice smooch or Biden cuddling Obama like that biker chick? I think Romney certainly wins in this contest with his bromance partner. What do you think?
That Ryan...

Not really, calling someone a "golfer" is not the same as calling someone a "faggot"

I agree with this. That's what its meant to do. The other thing its meant to do is make people uncomfortable, and it seems to have done that.
