The Grinch Confiscates Toy Guns
Just back from Boston, where the Globe reports on Rhode Island’s program for destroying toy guns. Parents take their kids to an elementary school, where they can feed their toy guns into a monster-shaped “Bash-o-matic” that “eats” the gun. And in return the kids get non-violent toys like stuffed animals. The Globe tells the story of an 8-year old boy who was so upset when his mother told him he had to give up his toy gun and sword that he tried to hide them (exactly what I would have done).
Silly me. Here I was thinking that Rhode Island's crime problem had something to do with the state’s failure to police the streets. Or the state’s hobbling economic growth. Or the state’s creation of housing projects that become breeding grounds for crime. But in fact, it’s all because little kids play with guns.
As James Taranto at the WSJ notes: “Nothing says Christmas like taking away a child’s treasured toy and destroying it.”

Re: The Grinch Confiscates Toy Guns
If the 8 year-old fed the "bash-o-matic" a copy of the paper would he get his gun back?
"The 26-year-old mother of six...." And no mention of Father (except the one that got shot). No mention of any Father in the story. Surprise, surprise.

They should also take away little girls dolls. This would cut down on teen pregnancy, right?

Mandating realistic dolls might be more effective, i.e. dolls that cry all night, constantly need changing and talk back.

The Darwin Awards were created for liberals like this. To have reached the point of such vacuity of the soul as to be lacking in any modicum of sense, and then pass this gene to one's children, surely will insure the end of the genetic line. Sadly, the children suffer most, but as they say about cute little polar bear cubs... they grow up to be big mean polar bears.
Perhaps the past election isn't an anomaly at all.

Re: The Grinch Confiscates Toy Guns
The idea that it's dangerous to play with toy guns is absurd. The other day I was chatting with some liberals who were lamenting the fact that a policeman shot a man who waved a knife at him. When the man started towards the cop, the cop fired on him. It turns out the knife was a small pocket knife, and the cop "should have known better." So if a guy waves a knife at you, don't shoot or your racist jerk. If it's a kid with a plastic gun, then you definitely should shoot, because you aren't trained to know the difference. It just illustrated the agenda politics of the left.

Same old story. If guns are evil, people don't have to take responsibility when something bad happens. That allows us to sue someone. I would love to send my daughter to this school. She's captain of the debate team, Senior Cadre in JROTC, and her Sweet Sixteen present was a shotgun. Or maybe I should send my son, who is a gunsmith. Virginia is a better state to be a kid in than R I.

All right. So they take away the toy guns, and provide stuffed animals which, a quick search on Google tells me, are major spreaders of such things as head lice, impetigo, ringworm and God knows what else.
What should we do to children who take stuffed animals on the subway?

A former coworker's wife wouldn't let their kids have any toy guns or other war toys. His screen saver featured pictures of them practicing Karate. So, toys are disallowed but learning real and lethal form of hand to hand combat is ok? These people are ruled entirely by emotion.

Another wholly predictable exercise in banality from the cotton-headed goo-goos. Take the spear from the warrior, take the bow from the hunter; we will be defeated and hungry. But nice! That there are people who actually believe that turning the world into Romper-Room will solve the problem of evil only shows how childishly self-centered and naive we the people have become. How sad for the little boys, shorn of another good thing of boyhood.

Nicolas Gage's Lord of War comes to mind wherein Yuri Orlov, an arms dealer, strikes up a relationship with a nut job African dictator by selling him tons of guns. In one of the last scenes in the movie the viewer is left with the impression that the African psychotic is going to use these guns to wipe-out a village full of innocent women and children. The only thing wrong with the morality of the gun transaction as presented in the film is the weapons are sold to the wrong guys.
