"The Great Boatlift of 9/11 became the largest sea evacuation in history; larger than the evacuation of Dunkirk in World War II, where 339,000 British and French soldiers were rescued over the course of nine days. On 9/11, nearly 500,000 civilians were rescued from Manhattan by boat. It took less than nine hours."

I hadn't heard a whisper of this story before today.

Great! Thanks for sharing. Really encouraging. Shows we have a lot of people with the right instincts. If we only get the current administration out in 2012 we can rebuild America again.

Boy, You ain't kidding!

Where's this story been? It couldn't have taken ten years to run the numbers and produce this 12 minute video.

This is a terrific piece of film--it doesn't seem like it's only twelve minutes long. The money quote? The crewman with no teeth saying, "this was just ordinary people, steppin' up because somethin' needed to be done."

Real American people being Real American Heroes.  People doing for people.  Why?  "Because I gotta do this!"  There is a chance.  Maybe we haven't gone over the edge after all.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have wept over the courage of everyday Americans here. I can't believe the story has not gotten out before now.

Powerful, indeed.  Thanks for posting, Aaron.  There are many untold stories, but this one is worth spreading far and wide.

There is a plaque at the US Merchant Marine Academy (where my son is a Midshipman Third Class) that details the accomplishments of the Midshipmen as they participated in the boatlift on 9/11. It is awe-inspiring.

Thank you, Aaron.  I'll spread this amongst my fellow mariners.
