Following on yesterday's post about IWV's study of independents that we commissioned Doug Schoen to do -- this is about what I think the most fascinating finds were - and some of it is pretty remarkable!

"Among independents, 89 percent believe government, in Michael Barone’s formulation, needs to “go on a diet: spending, the federal debt, government services, taxes and bureaucratic rules should also be decreased so that government can be slimmer and more limber and return more control to citizens.”"

Gosh I hope this is truly representative. This is the most important issue - and if it is true, perhaps it will last past November, into 2012, and hopefully till 2016. If we could have 6 years focused on getting HONEST about government spending and power, we might be able to slow this TItanic down before it tears on the icebergs...

2012? 2016? I'm just hoping it lasts through November, though I'm not too worried on that score. The American people, in daily life, are sensible, decent and fill me with great pride. The American people, in opinion polls, are fickle, forgetful and fill me with great pride in the founders' brakes on democracy.
