 William Shatner also did a public service announcement about this, he apparently was burned while deep frying a gobbler.  There has to be a market out there for a safe fryer - US ingenuity will solve the problem (I hope)!

I can't count how many turkeys I've fried. Never had a mishap. You just have to follow the instructions CAREFULLY and have a great deal of respect for the materials you're working with. Understand that, handled inappropriately, it is hard to distinguish the materials from those in an improvised incendiary device. ;-)

The beauty of UL. 

They can't ban turkey fryers.

They simply refuse to certify them.

I'm thankful for UL.

Aside: The "overfill the fryer with oil" problem is hardly limited to turkey fryers.

I've made the same mistake simply overfilling a pot on the stove.

Drop the items to be fried into the pot

-> pot overflows

-> oil catches on fire

-> girlfriend bans boyfriend from the kitchen indefinitely.

I was amazed that the UL, in their zeal to deter people from frying turkeys, didn't mention the most fundamental safety precaution: turning off the flame when lowering the turkey into the oil.  This would have prevented the fire in the first example, which is the most common cause of fires in frying turkeys.  There would have been an oily mess to clean up, but no fire.

However you cook your turkey, don't forget to brine it first to render it tender and moist.

Regardless of what I'm cooking or the method I'm using, I always wear a hardhat and full-face respirator. I've always emerged from the kitchen unscathed, and you should see the looks on my guest's faces as dinner is brought to the table.

Before you criticize UL, remember that it could be much worse.  They could be an agency of the federal government.

$89 is amazing, too. How do they do it? Oh, ya, I forgot: China. (Don't they eat turkeys raw in China?)

My son deep fried a turkey a few years ago and I remember really loving it.

Thanks for the idea of brining -- you are exactly one day too late for today's beauty -- but I will get my wife to read about this and see what she thinks for next time. (She's not easy to direct but I will try -- it's usually about me not being in charge or something. I always point out that my terrific advice is free at least. How can this start so many unpleasant discussions? I just don't get it.)

Humza is frying his turkey today.  Pictures look delicious!  Personally I cook my turkey at high temp after brining for 24 hours (Cook's Illustrated).  We've been doing it this way for years, and it is always perfect.

I agree those things are dangerous.  I would suggest an aluminum forge or ceramics kiln.  An advantage of the kiln are several options for adding a marvellous glaze.
