From the Christian Science Monitor:

Veteran broadcast journalist Geraldo Rivera says he’s considering a run for a US Senate seat from New Jersey in 2014.

“I mention this only briefly ... fasten your seatbelt,” he said Thursday on his mid-day radio program. “I am and have been in touch with some people in the Republican Party in New Jersey. I am truly contemplating running for Senate against Frank Lautenberg or Cory Booker in New Jersey.”

Yes, the guy who, when the rest of us were sorting through the ambiguities, thought the hoodie was the real villain in the Trayvon Martin case. The guy who felt no compunction about broadcasting the location of the 101st Airborne in the middle of the Iraq war. The guy we have to thank for the deinstitutionalization movement for the mentally ill (though let's concede that his original reporting was covering people in legitimately horrific circumstances).

Is there an upside? Well, I guess, if he makes it, the upper chamber can now do its paternity tests in-house. They could even do the reveals during sweeps.

Good lord. Sooner or later, we're just going to have to throw up our hands and let Ryan Seacrest host election night.

OMG!!!

Troy, that's a brilliant idea. You may have just found a way to save CNN.

Geraldo would certainly be entertaining. I wish him luck and may his Republican opponent trounce him.

I can see Geraldo walking into the White House, camera crews all around, and opening the door to the Oval Office only to find the Office empty.

If the Democrats can have United States Senator Al Franken then the Republicans can have Senator Rivera...

Look, he's done a lot of crap.

But exposing Willowbrook evens him out karma-wise in my book.

Allow me to be the first to congratulate Senator-elect Booker on his impressive electoral victory.

The Republican governor of New Jersey is the guy who lavished praise on Obama just before the 2012 election, said he cried when he spoke to Springsteen by phone, told opponents of the Ground Zero mosque to shut up, stated that being in the US illegally is not a crime and is a climate change alarmist.  Your point about Geraldo is . . .?

I was just going to say, EJ, that if he gets elected, we might be able to get Federal help to find the vault at last.

You put it this way and he sounds better than the average Senator.

Yeah- he'd be better than Brian Williams or Scott Pelley.

If he successfully moves from Fox News to the Senate GOP Caucus, he will have raised the average IQ of both organizations.

Well, at least he hasn't had a free ride on a plane to the Dominican Republic to meet with under-age girls.

I find it interesting that he's a Republican. I'm not sure I'd have guessed that.

Given that the current trend is to use senators to fill executive branch positions maybe he has his eye on becoming Secretary of Defense under the next GOP president.

Just what I was thinking--compared to Franken, Rivera would be Daniel Webster.
By the way, my hometown of Staten Island still has the Willowbrook nuthouse campus--now it is the campus for the College of Staten Island. Fitting, in a way.

Hey, at least he's not a pedophile like Menendez, although Geraldo has slept with Bette Midler, which may be worse...

So, my choices will be, Weekend At Frankie's (come on, you know he died a decade ago), Geraldo, or the guy who did nothing to lower Newark's murder rate but is popular because he Tweets? I might be sitting this one out.

The world's foremost deliberative body could include as a member Geraldo?!?!

Yes, Geraldo is embarrassing and bad.

But I'm having trouble thinking of a Democrat senator I would prefer over him at the moment. Feel free to suggest some names I may have overlooked.
