The Editors Speak
Once again, some of the Ricochet editors -- me, Mollie Hemingway, Mark Hemingway, Diane Ellis, and James Lileks -- hopped on Skype this morning to talk over last night's speech, the DNC as a whole, a favorite Virginia bakery, and bounces in general.
As always, it's on the Member Feed.
Which means, you have to be a member to hear it. And coming next week, you have to be a member to hear the flagship podcast.
If you're a member, thank you!
Ricochet is fast becoming a must-read site for members, contributors, and folks in high places.

I hope that if Mitt wins, you can have Clint Eastwood and Mike Murphy on the same podcast the day after.

Re: The Editors Speak
I have an idea, Rob, and you can take it for what it's worth to you. Something I thought of while listening to one of your skin in the game commercials (which I don't mind, by the way) What if, on some of the free podcasts, you had 15 to 20 second "testimonies" from members? Why did you join Ricochet? What do you get out of it? Is it worth the cup of coffee? Maybe that would convince more listeners to join, if real people from the site were giving their two cents?
The thing is, I don't want Ricochet to go away. I am hoping it continues to grow and is profitable for you and your investors. That's the only way this sticks around, because I know you aren't going to seek federal funding. I'm worried by the up-tick in pleas for people to join that perhaps the site isn't doing well, so I want to do my part in helping the site grow. Any of our prominent members would lend their voice I am sure, without expectation of discounts or anything of the sort. Right guys?
Re: The Editors Speak
Look for this show in The Young Guns feed.

Re: The Editors Speak
I second the thoughts, though I'm not really worried - I do want to see the site approach Vne.

I totally agree with James about Obama: he's fast asleep in the hammock of his own mind.

I love this idea! Blue Yeti, how do we make this happen? Can we ask members to post short testimonials on the Member Feed, which we can move over to the Main Feed every now and then?
Ken, you're right -- we need more members. We're holding on, but I'd be doing a major Obama if I told you we were in good financial shape.

Re: The Editors Speak
I'm slightly disheartened to hear the flagship podcast will not be available to the great unwashed. Sites that rely on memberships for revenue have to put out some free cheese, but you don't want the freeloaders getting their fill on the free stuff. I was initially hooked by the flagship podcast though it was not my reason to join, even if it had been pulled away.
Just a suggestion: You could have a half-podcast available for free, and tack on member testimonies before, in and/or after the podcast. Make sure at least one of the testimonies is a female, but not necessarily one with a breathy/sultry voice. You know, a conservative one.
Re: The Editors Speak
We're going to post the first ten minutes of the flagship in front of the paywall. In addition, all of the other podcasts will now become free. We hope that will provide enough cheese for everyone.

Re: The Editors Speak
In answer to Rob's final question, of course we will be up late on election night. Our dear friends in the media will absolutely refuse to call the election for Romney until about 4 am, when a grownup finally walks into the room, stares into their tear-streaked faces and says, "Guys. C'mon. It's over. Go home."

Re: The Editors Speak
I value this site so much, dare I suggest we pay a little more? Would that help to keep you all in my life?
I've been recruiting like crazy, and now I'm considering buying memberships. Is there a place on the site to purchase a gift certificate?

Re: The Editors Speak
It's interesting to flip the paywall and the podcasts. I think it's a good idea. Was that always the plan, or a recent decision?
Separately, thank you for the Walk On By at the end. I'm old enough to have heard that song thousands of times on the radio, but never at such a high sound quality (yes, not that high, but just higher). It's quite an amazing song--if still way too depressing to own or listen to by choice. Wow, Bacharach and David were talented--depressingly talented!

Re: The Editors Speak
What optimistic predictions!
I don't know how to digest these bright visions for the election night. As a good conservative, I'm accustomed to hearing predictions that include some combination of fire, socialism, and brimstone.

I can guarantee you a testimonial people won't forget. As to whether it boosts membership, well...

Re: The Editors Speak
The testimonials should go on Facebook, along with little snippets of the rest of the podcast...

Personally, as a conservative, I would enjoy being pandered to by a breathy/sultry voice. Its a nice break from being shreeked at by left wing harpies.

Re: The Editors Speak
Diane's prediction for the election is the most pleasing but Mrs. Hemmingway may be more on target.
That last five minutes with James on about Scarlett and her friends needing to make tbe phone calls to Dinesh D'Souza absolutely nailed the sheer hypocrisy of Hollywood types.
As a foreign female who is addicted to Ricochet, particularly the member feed, I recommend a sultry male voice with a Scottish accent giving the sales pitch. Maybe Niall Ferguson could help out as he does a great Sean Connery imitation?

Re: The Editors Speak
OK, Rob, you finally got to me. Now I can end the guilt trip whenever I hear the "please join" plea.
