A friend is planning a trip to Mexico and was doing his research. On Trip Advisor, travelers review hotels, restaurants and attractions. One visitor to the Basilica de Santa Maria de Guadalupe gave a thumbs down.

I'm always surprised when I visit a basilica and find, well, a basilica. Aren't you?

Touristas need to lose the Disney view of the experience.

I never give any credence to online reviewers who can't use contractions properly.

I think he's mad because he got a soft bean basilica instead of the all beef basilica he originally requested.

Appears the Brits are the greatest complainers on vacations. Perhaps socialism play a role, Hmmm.

Other than childbirth, what is the proper use of contractions?

I use TripAdvisor.com all the time when planning both business and personal trips. It's helped me find some good places to stay and visit throughout the world. I’m also very careful to actually read a lot of the recent reviews just because of this kind of stupidity. And, anyway, it's kind of entertaining...

First, a "crowd" is not one person.  Second, if you are used to European basilica you might find the Mexican variaty a little over the top too...but usually in a good way.

Yes, well, I imagine if you're used to European basilicas, it's a shock to the system to find actual worshipers at actual churches.

This reminds me of my all time favorite diplomatic faux pas committed by SoS Hillary Clinton at this very site.  As she was touring the basilica, which was built to house Juan Diego's iconic tilma portraying the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, she asked the priest conducting her tour, "who painted it?"  To which the ever patient priest answered, "God."

A large church with worshippers.  That's really got to get in the way of those who come to see the shiny things.

To me , this defines the very beauty of crowd sourcing. One person's opinion is irrelevant. Its the crowd's that matters and that typically seems to converge to an fairly accurate assessment.  Before, we would rely on some "expert" who, also thinking worship is distasteful or basilicas are ridiculous would pan it, though couched  in more erudite, sensitive language. And we had no other sources.

Now we get to  say, "okay, that guy isn't me, keep reading".

Same with movies. Now I don't have to go to some critically acclaimed, conservative-bashing swill. If its a stupid  movie probably 80% will agree, bypassing the lib-media supported message.

To be fair, only one of the "helpful" flags the poster has earned was for this review. The other would presumably be for another review he did on TripAdvisor.

Perhaps warning people that Manhattan, while nice if you like that sort of thing, is very urban.

 The old Borscht Belt joke:

First Jewish lady: "So you're back from Paris.  So, nu, how did you like Versailles?"

Second Jewish lady: "Frankly, I thought it was a little overdone... like the Fontainebleu in Miami."
