The Democratic Tradition of Sheer Windbaggery

No, it wasn't just you. Obama's speech really was almost endless--which only placed him in the Democratic tradition. From a friend:
Peter,
I bring to your attention:
http://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/sou_minutes.php#axzz1kRCnJxfk
The upshot is that every single Republican SOTU going back to Nixon's first has been less than 60 minutes long -- that is, all 24 speeches. Every single Democratic SOTU since Clinton's first has been longer than 60 minutes -- that is, all 10 speeches.
Best,
Tristan

Re: The Democratic Tradition of Sheer Windbaggery
The statistics reflect the different takes on subject matter of the speech.
Republicans think the State of the Union speech is about the country.
Democrats think it's about the Government.

Democrats never miss an opportunity to tax something that isn't moving and in this case its our patience.

Re: The Democratic Tradition of Sheer Windbaggery
Oh, give Obama a break. The parts about chaining high school students to their desks until they're eligible for Medicare was boffo, as was his clarion call for community colleges to save the nation. You can't cut corners with that sort of stuff.

Great minds think alike. :-) I posted the same link with a similar point in the live chat.

The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the St Louis Blues in a shootout for their 7th straight win. My 3-year-old son, who adores Fleury, watched the game curled up under my left arm.
My point?
Unlike many of you, I enjoyed my evening.

So, apparently, my decision to play with my daughter, then fold laundry while watching Star Trek: The Animated Series on Netflix was a wise one

Peter, his gestures waggled on even longer with the sound turned off. If nothing else, Obama should have taken pity on Justice Ginsburg.
Yes, Psuedo-cat (if I may). It takes a *bleep* of a lot longer to spew out the gushings of big government than delicately to chart the susurrations of a limited.

Sure. You'll have to pay Canadian GST. No need to thank me.

Re: The Democratic Tradition of Sheer Windbaggery
Did I miss the part where some "ordinary American" was honored? Or did he skip that?
I'm asking, I had an under-the-weather toddler and a little girl who was a tad hyper.
At any rate, isn't that standard practice? Don't they always do that?
Re: The Democratic Tradition of Sheer Windbaggery
So it's not just in my head...

Ronald Reagan started that tradition. Careful.

Re: The Democratic Tradition of Sheer Windbaggery
I suppose that's really a statement about Clinton and Obama. Carter's were actually more brief than Ford's, although longer than Nixon's.
I think the lesson here is the last two Democratic presidents have been really stuck on themselves. That's something of a marker for the modern left in general.

The reason for my questions is this: was it interminable even though he cut out a "standard" element? Or did he include it, and I just missed it?
In other words, how windy was he?

Re: The Democratic Tradition of Sheer Windbaggery
A confession - that was the first Obama speech in any forum that I have ever listened to in its entirety. Entirely due to the fun of playing with the Ricochet chat.
I don't know if that's something to credit or curse. My despite for Barack Obama and his followers has grown tenfold. Tonight's speech was the most self-regarding, duplicitous fog of lies I've encountered since Robert McNamara tried to rehab himself. Worse, because its immaturity will be celebrated and its transparency ignored.

Re: The Democratic Tradition of Sheer Windbaggery
For Democrats, SOTU speeches are like inventorying your gifts on Christmas Morning. For Republicans, they're like getting your dentist's bill after the swelling has gone down...for one more shot of pain.

Yeah, he honored a trans-gendered illegal-alien dwarf who established a shelter for lesbian sea turtles. That's what passes for "ordinary" in Obamaland.

Re: The Democratic Tradition of Sheer Windbaggery
Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought you were Canadian. It is simple masochism for an American to listen to the SOTU, it may amount to a pathological disorder for non-journalist non-Americans. I'm sure your Province stands by to aid you in your time of crisis.

Ok, then.
"Asked and answered" as I believe the lawyers say. That's what they always said on Law and Order, anyway.
Seems awfully unfair to leave out the gay male river turtles, though.
Maybe a trans-gendered temporary guest-worker giant could take care of them.
Then again, maybe not, no matter what Barry says the economy ain't so grand.
