The Day the Mainstream Media Died
One need not be a fan -- nor even a defender, I think -- of Michele Bachmann to realize that the cover of the new issue of Newsweek (pictured at right) is a low-water mark for mainstream American journalism.
First, there's the imagery. The photograph chosen by Newsweek's editorial team looks like what would happen if Sears got into the business of taking mug shots.
Then there's the breathless copy. "Queen of Rage"? Bachmann, eternally sunny, is the antithesis. "The Evils of Government"? Has a liberal ever appeared on Newsweek's cover with a caption about the 'evils of free enterprise'?
It is not breaking news that Newsweek has become an organ of left-wing agitprop (as a matter of fact, nothing remotely resembling breaking news has graced Newsweek's pages for years). It is perhaps noteworthy, however, that even in the pursuit of that debased mission, Newsweek is not very good.

Re: The Day the Mainstream Media Died
The day the MSM died was sometime way back in the '90s. The current Newsweek cover is merely an eructation of decomp from a noisome, fetid corpse.

Can't top that! (eructation, eh? Had to look that one up ... damn fine word!)

Troy, Newsweek is the reading man's MSNBC.

If I weren't so annoyed about the photo choice I'd laugh about your line.
Bachmann is a very attractive woman yet they chose a shot that makes her look like she's searching for a hit of meth. It's mean girl jounalism.

You should refer to this rag by it's appropriate Orwellian name used by many who've understood what it is for years: Newspeak

What was Newsweek? A magazine?

Re: The Day the Mainstream Media Died
Trust Newsweek to blow a hit piece photo... on their own cover.
"The Queen of Rage?" Really?
They're clearly huge jerkfaces for using that photo, but they're morons if they think she appears angry.

Truly nauseating, yet unsurprising. I'm ashamed to once have been a subscriber. The National Enquirer has far more credibility.

I might be offended by this but for the fact that nobody reads Newsweak; not even my liberal friends. It's a supermarket tabloid, no nore, no less.

Bachmann has been attacked like this for years. She eats these folks for breakfast.

I would agree to the extent of nobody being defined as those who think critically at some level. Unfortunately, too many Americans form their political opinions in supermarket checkout lines.

Exactly. This magazine may have sold for a single dollar, but the ignorance they propagate is alive, and well.

Re: The Day the Mainstream Media Died
With a headline like that, couldn't they at least show her looking angry? Irritated, even?

Re: The Day the Mainstream Media Died
I'm sure they had to scour through thousands of photos to find that pic. The funny thing is how hard it is to find a photo of Pelosi that doesn't make her look that crazy.

Re: The Day the Mainstream Media Died
Bachmann is rather petite. That photo looks like John Kerry in drag.

Re: The Day the Mainstream Media Died
Here's Jonathan Capehart's charming take on the photo, from the WaPo:
It’s as if someone is dangling a treat (or maybe it’s a line of Scripture) to get her to look at the camera the way a photographer tries to get a kid to focus on class picture day.
The word "sneering" springs immediately to mind.

Re: The Day the Mainstream Media Died
1. Quite clearly, someone did not read the same left-wing rant-fest commonly known as "Newsweek" that I did as a kid. When wasn't this waste of matter an organ of the left?
2. I've always preferred "legacy" media to "main-stream" media...

Re: The Day the Mainstream Media Died
Really no different that MSM always picking the most unflattering photos of George Bush that they could find.
If Newsweek shrivels up and dies, (it had a near death experience, I think) won't matter one bit to me. It's a total joke, but I guess some people take it seriously.
