The City of Berkeley <3 Islamic Terrorists
Well, only the "cleared" ones. From SFGate:
On Tuesday, on the recommendation of its Peace and Justice Commission, the Berkeley City Council is set to vote on a resolution to invite "one or two cleared" Guantanamo Bay detainees to resettle in Berkeley.
Peace and Justice Commissioner Rita Maran told me that the idea was to invite to Berkeley "the kind of people you'd like to have living next door to you or dating your cousin."
Every single thing about those two sentences is absurd, and laughable, and infuriating, and then laughable again. Everytime I attempt to think seriously about them and the utter ignorance they represent, I start laughing again.
In the first place, what on earth does "cleared" mean?
As Thomas Joscelyn, senior fellow for the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies observed, "There's an entire mythology" about detainees being exonerated, when they've simply won conditional releases or habeas corpus petitions.
President Obama's own task force looked into Guantanamo's 240 detainees in 2009. While it approved some transfers and conditional releases, Joscelyn noted, "They didn't find any innocent goat herders."
Once again, the left displays its malignant narcissism. Everything and everyone is a prop.

Re: The City of Berkeley <3 Islamic Terrorists
Peace and Justice Commissioner is funny on its own.
My town has five commissioners: finance & revenue, parks & public property, public affairs, public safety, and public works. I thought we had it all covered, but I guess not.
I have a cousin who is recently single......and it is Valentine's Day, afterall.....Hmmmmm.

Re: The City of Berkeley <3 Islamic Terrorists
As someone who occasionally goes to the Jewish Community Center in Berkeley for special events, I think the Peace and Justice Commissioner needs to prepare a map of Berkeley showing the points of Jewish cultural interest -- synagogues, the JCC, the Judah Magnes Museum -- as well as the community organizations and facilities for the LGBT community, and present that to whomever from Gitmo she invites to Berkeley. Either the former detainee will take that as a sign that Berkeley isn't a community that shares his values, or he'll take that as an invitation to do mischief... which will give the residents of Berkeley an object lesson in the nature of Gitmo detainees.

Perfect. It's their ostentatious displays of "tolerance" that always make me think they are just trolling.

I notice she didn't say, "...dating your daughter..."

Re: The City of Berkeley <3 Islamic Terrorists
Well, by embracing and interacting with a group that hates America less than they do, it's possible that they (ie, Berkeleyites) can be drawn to the political center.
Re: The City of Berkeley <3 Islamic Terrorists
I cannot think of anything that would serve Berkeley better. Poetic justice, say I.

They are engaged in magical thinking. It is on the very same level as voodoo dolls and sacrificing virgins to the Volcano God.
They believe that if they invite the former Gitmo detainee to loving, tolerant, peaceful Berkeley, they will catalyze a radical transformation in his thinking about the West, and that this new understanding and tolerance will spread throughout the Islamic world like a virus to which its people have no immunity.
They do not understand that Islamicism developed as the antibodies to Western ideas of tolerance and coexistence, and that their puny gesture will not infect anyone so immunized. They cannot conceive that showing this sort of tolerance and understanding to the former Gitmo detainee will simply give him a piece of intelligence to share with his jihadist friends: "come to Berkeley -- not only will no one suspect you, they will help you set up whatever destructive plot you wish."
It's like the kid in Portland said: "No one's looking for jihad here."

And I do note - one or two individuals does = "<3" as per the title of the post. Speaking of which, Happy "Singles Awareness Day" everyone . . .

Re: The City of Berkeley <3 Islamic Terrorists
I worked for a time in a circus and the tiger trainer, a young guy from Wales, would raise his tiger cubs with wolves who were tougher than dogs but a bit less wild than Siberian tigers in order to domesticate, as it were, the cubs.
In that vein, I suggest the town of Berkeley take in a few conservative Americans - "cleared" of course, to help in the adjustment of all concerned.

That was my first reaction too, but then I thought, Berkeley, schmerkely, they'll be only a short drive away from my home, business and and family in the Silicon Valley! Perhaps their release could be conditional on wearing one of Uncle Junior's ankle bracelets to assure surrounding communities that the "cleared" detainees remain in the People's Republic of Berkeley?

Re: The City of Berkeley <3 Islamic Terrorists
Some have suggested that these detainees may not be all that safe. But Berkeley has some margin of safety to work with, having declared itself a "nuclear-free city." In the event of a nuclear bomb blast in the Bay area, I assume all shockwaves, heat, and fallout will follow the law and avoid Berkeley.
Somewhere Orwell is crying.

Well, obviously: it means they've passed a certain level of Scientology! I mean, would you want a Xenu worshipper to be dating your cousin?

Re: The City of Berkeley <3 Islamic Terrorists
If you wanted to DESIGN a religion/political movement to be as repugnant as possible to the stated values of Berkeley-style leftists, it would look very much like radical/militant Islam. Yet these leftists have been strangely reluctant to engage in wholehearted condemnation of this enemy (observe, for example, the endless excuse-making, for and even glamorization of, Palestinian terrorism), and even more reluctant to join with their fellow Americans for its defeat. Indeed, it seems that many journalists, entertainers, writers, and college professors have strong feelings of fear and/or contempt for the majority of their fellow Americans that greatly overshadow any concerns about terrorist fanatics and terrorist states with nuclear weapons.

The irony is that Berkeley is bombarded on a daily basis with radiation from an unshielded nuclear power source. Berkeley residents are suffering skin damage and even skin cancer from their exposure to this reactor, and its owner/operator hasn't done anything to shield the reactor itself or to protect Berkeleyans from its dangerous output.
Rather than worrying about the fate of Gitmo detainees, Berkeley should demand that the owner/operator of this lethal radiation source properly shield it, and failing that, should erect a suitable radiation shield to protect its citizens.
Either that, or they should pass an ordinance only letting Berkeley's citizens to come out at night.
