Breaking debate-bracketing news: New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is endorsing Mitt Romney's presidential bid.

A 3 p.m. presser in New Hampshire is scheduled.

With the presidential field apparently closed, this is the next phase of the selection process to watch: where the GOP's galaxy of governors start landing.

Romney now has Christie; Perry has Louisiana's Bobby Jindal and Nevada's Brian Sandoval.

Any guesses as to who gets the following "big gets"? Specifically:

Iowa's Terry Branstad

South Carolina's Nikki Haley

Florida's Rick Scott

Indiana's Mitch Daniels

Mississippi's Haley Barbour

New Mexico's Susana Martinez

Ohio's John Kasich

Virginia's Bob McDonnell

And a very big name . . .  former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush

Saturday Night Live had video of this meeting.

"Yeah, but let's say you could pick anyone, not just the candidates who've announced." It's funny because it's painful.

G.H.W. Bush=G.W.Bush=Jeb Bush

Jeb is the past.  He "could' run for President but his father and brother pretty much killed that prospect.

Remember, Jeb said, "No" to drilling of the FL coast.  Story here.

  • Pawlenty has endorsed Romney also
  • When and who will Sarah Palin endorse?  Not Mitt
  • Jeb Bush needs a job, right?  Mitt
  • Susana Martinez as darkhorse VP?  Mitt
  • Yosemite Sam?  Perry

Jeb will probably go with Romney, as his ascolyte Mel Martinez did.

Crist's slip-and-fall law firm is hosting an Obama fundraiser tonight, of course.

Rick Scott says he's staying out of it, but he is very much a Tea Partier, so I suspect his sympathies lie with Cain.  Safe money says he would lean away from the Establishment's choice.

Romney is running an amazingly powerful campaign.  Perry looks like he's going to get some traction with Obamacare/Romneycare "advisor" story, and BOOM.  That's squashed.  Great tactics.  Great chess!

I assume it would be more valuable now for Romney to get a few Southerners but one has to wonder how much it would benefit them now versus waiting until the race is more clear. I would vote for Yosemite Sam over Barry O'Bama and perhaps over some of the others as well.

Endorsements seem fairly predictable to me.  The social liberals will endorse Romney and the conservatives will endorse Perry or Cain.  Personally, I think Cain will loose traction while Perry will gain it as time passes.  My only concern is changing the primary dates and what effect this will have on the nomination.

And the next Attorney General of the United States is...

Chris Christie

McDonnell and Haley likely for Perry, I would bet that the rest are better than 50-50 to go for Romney.

I get the strong impression that Perry was not overwhelmingly popular at the RGA.

That is one of the funniest skits I've seen out of SNL in quite a while.  Mocks the press as much as it mocks Romney.

And very prescient given today's endorsement...

Nice Springsteen reference Mr. Whalen.  You left Sen. Jim DeMint off the list.  His endorsement will be more important here than even Gov. Haley's prior to our South Carolina primary on January 21st. (A mere 14 and a half weeks away!)

There's not much reliable local polling yet but one of likely voters shows Cain ahead among likely Republican primary voters.  Herman does even better among "definite" R voters. http://americanresearchgroup.com/  We do not have registration by party in SC so on primary election day you request the ballot you want. Some Democrats will vote in the Republican primary as there won't be a contest in their camp.

DeMint's backing could prove crucial in the state but I don't think any of these carries much weight outside the state.  Chris Christie's endorsement of Romney won't matter here at all and a Lindsey Graham endorsement would likely be a net negative.

I agree with this. I think the Mid-West seems pretty strongly Mitt territory, as is New Mexico, and both governors are pretty in tune with their states. Branstad's been solidly Perry since before Perry declared. Haley is probably Perry; both the others have identity politics problems that could be toxic for her.

I agree, Duane, with a caveat that the RGA came out very strong for Nikki Haley last year.  I think Perry has the inside track to her endorsement here in SC, but I think the RGA could lean on her in another direction.  If it's between Perry or Romney, it's either Perry or neither.  She would also be a candidate to go with an unconventional pick like, say, Herman Cain.

I think Scott goes for Perry or Cain, Jeb for Romney, and Kasich, McDonnell, Walker and Martinez keep their powder dry for a long time.  And Barbour and Daniels, well ... that's the big question, isn't it?
