Reportedly--I have yet to confirm this--Erdoğan has recommended that the international community "take the necessary lessons from the Preveza victory." I suspect no one has reminded him that the more recent battle of Preveza was in 1911, not 1538.

Here's a Turkish naval blog for those interested.

Actually, I take that back. SACEUR Admiral James Stavridis just pitched up in Ankara. He was apparently in Tel Aviv the day before. I suspect he may have pointed this out.

Exactly what I was thinking. VDH has a good write-up of that battle in his 'Carnage in Culture'.

"Turkey's national interests in the seas reach from its surrounding waters to the Suez Canal and the Indian Ocean."
One should also think about airborne anti-ship missiles. And of course there are US and Israeli subs in the Mediterranean along the the Russkies. And a few from NATO countries.
