The Audacity of Desperation
Of all the spectacles of human existence, few are as personally satisfying as watching the last throes of politicians who know the gig is up. Case in point: Florida's 2nd Congressional District.
Incumbent Democrat Allan Boyd is in trouble, and with good reason. One of those mythical beings heretofore known as Blue Dog Democrats, Boyd previously presented himself as an independent spirit who would represent the will of his constituents. So when the disastrous Cap and Trade bill proposed to tax the very air we breathe and make energy virtually unaffordable, I along with many of Boyd's other constituents urged him to vote against it. He ignored us.
When Obamacare proposed to extend the federal government's reach well beyond all Constitutional limits, we again urged Boyd to stand by his oath to uphold the Constitution. He said it was up to the courts, not congress, to determine the constitutionality of legislation. He voted for Obamacare and against the wishes of his constituents.
So now that his Republican challenger is leading him some 16 points in the latest polls, how does the Congressman respond? By running ads that contain one outrageous charge after another. Any move toward the Fair Tax, which is predicated on the repeal of the personal income tax, is misrepresented as a 23% tax increase. This blatant falsification of the issue is little more than a clumsy effort to take the spotlight off of the enormous tax hiking schemes proposed by Obama and Pelosi, and supported by Boyd.
The fear from Boyd and his fellow travelers on the left is palpable. You can almost smell it. This isn't a wave, or even an approaching tsunami. It's a reckoning.

Re: The Audacity of Desperation
I think you are right and that the left have a deficit in their credibility account - so their attacks are no longer believable. If the results are dramatic enough and IF the GOP doesn't drop the ball, we could be well on our way to getting the country headed back on the right track.

Re: The Audacity of Desperation
Dave, your analysis of this particular race is a good illustration of what I meant on an earlier thread: "Character counts" is more than just a slogan. What does it say about the sorts of people who pursue power that they would stoop to such despicable tactics to achieve their ends? Would you invite such a person into your kitchen for coffee, or allow him to date your daughter? So why do we routinely elect them to represent us in Congress?
Allan Boyd looks like roadkill at this point. Rather smells like it, too.

Re: The Audacity of Desperation
What induced the alleged Blue Dogs to vote for this crap in the face of polls and demonstration, flagrantly flouting the will of their constituents? There are two options. One, it is their long-held dream, and they're idealogues. I suspect this is true of very few, who are careerists. The second is arm-twisting by leadership. What threats were used to twist arms?
My keen sense of schadenfreude loves the last option.

Re: The Audacity of Desperation
Our reckoning will be reported as a plague. Our cutbacks each a slash at the throats of America's children. The clawbacks an attack on the seniors that fought our wars, built our country. Disenfranchisements will be described as the waterboarding of the old and infirm.
Prepare for the dark ages, as reported by that shining beacon of truth, our MSM.
Imagery like Bosch's visions of hell will accompany the suggestion of delinking public union pension shortfalls from the citizenry.
First, let's hope we get it. Second, let's hope we have the intestinal fortitude to carry through to morning.

Re: The Audacity of Desperation
Dave: "Reckoning" may not be strong enough. It may rise to the "wrath of God" levels described in the original Ghostbusters movie. See below (slightly edited), as the Ghostbusters report to the One:
Dr. Peter Venkman: [The Democrats are] headed for a disaster of biblical proportions.
[Obama]: What do you mean, "biblical"?
Dr Ray Stantz: What he means is Old Testament, Mr. [President], real wrath of God type stuff.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Exactly.
Dr Ray Stantz: Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling!
Dr. Egon Spengler: Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes...
Winston Zeddemore: The dead rising from the grave!
Dr. Peter Venkman: Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria!
One of the great movies of all time. And so prophetic.

On second thought, maybe I should have called it The Desperation of Audacity?

Dave Carter It's a reckoning. ·
Is that an awesome Tombstone reference?!
