The New York Times is reporting that later this week Justin Cardinal Rigali will announce that he is stepping down as Roman Catholic archbishop of Philadelphia--and that the Pope has named as his successor Charles Chaput, currently archbishop of Denver. From the 2008 Uncommon Knowledge interview with Archbishop Chaput, a memorable moment:

I'm not Catholic but I am from Denver and have been following this news. Chaput is a fascinating man with a sharp mind. He articulates the Catholic faith and its doctrines with media savvy. This John Allen interview of him about his new appointment is a great read.

From the John Allen interview:
"But I want you to know that all the time I've been a Broncos fan, I've secretly been a Steelers fan … I hope that doesn't get me into trouble in Philadelphia!"
I don't know how Philadelphians will react to that news, but I know Hugh Hewitt will be disappointed. ;-)
I pray God graces us with an equally good successor in Denver. God knows He's the only one who can!

Lovely, Peter, thank you. He is firm but gentle in manner. I wish that there were more men in the episcopacy like him.
For the most part, as the pederasty scandals revealed, our bishops are about as moral as are businessmen.

Gotta love the NYTimes. Couldn't get more than a couple lines in before letting a Jesuit academic get his 2 cents in. And gasp, Archbishop Chaput is against abortion and same-sex "marriage"! Shocker! Even the top paper in the country is inept when it comes to most things that involve religion.
Anyway, Archbishop Chaput is a great man and Philly is very lucky to get him. He's one of the increasing number of solid American bishops and represents a voice which most young Catholics follow; the voice of orthodoxy.

Yes, that's one of several reasons why Liberals hate Mrs Palin.

I hope the shake-up in Philly is a sign of more things to come. It seems like Boston could use some attention as well.
