That's Not Funny

I just deleted the caption contest because I was appalled by the tone of the comments. We can try that again after everyone re-reads the Code of Conduct. This is Ricochet, folks. As Tony Soprano said, "In this house, it's 1954."

Very wise decision, Claire. Thank you.

Re: That's Not Funny
I'm alarmed of course that Murphy has made a run at Sajak's crown, but I am well-comforted knowing that the Queen reigns supreme.

Re: That's Not Funny
Fine by me.
Re: That's Not Funny
Interesting move considering the debates I've been having on Ricochet today over free speech and the defense of insults :-)
Re: That's Not Funny
There's no expectation of free speech on Ricochet. We're not the government; we're a private community. People are paying to be here. They're paying, in part, because they expect our Code of Conduct to be enforced. We are Draconian censors of nastiness at Ricochet. That's what makes us Ricochet and not the gutter press.
Re: That's Not Funny
I agree 100% Claire, and we do that to make our conversations better, not worse.
So I advocate using the Ricochet Code of Conduct in life. Not compelling anyone else to, but why not make conversations better if we can?

Re: That's Not Funny
Thank you, Claire - the Dark Mistress of Ricochet. I would hate to see this site go the way of some many others, and be reduced to mindless bickering and sniping of each other's opinions. We should respectfully disagree, and not take cheap shots at one another.

Can you describe the comment that broke the camel's back? I didn't see anything after the first five or so. After all, they were meant to be Michelle's thought bubbles....no? If people think she's nuts, that's what they think.

I think that requiring a membership fee to talk to me would indeed improve my daily life! :-)

Re: That's Not Funny
Is it just me or has there has been a different feel on Ricochet this week -- a little bit like the early stages of a mob? Mike Murphy posting on the O'Donnell race flashpoint didn't help with a condescending tone and COC violations (first time a Contributor got stepped on by the editors) Major Don jumped in offering to grace us with a dialog in what seemed to me to be a patronizing attitude. The Major's comments were like pushing in another rod of fuel into the 401K thread that had already threatened to go super-critical. Kenneth and other members provided the damping then. Now this conversation taken off the board. This may be a tipping point for Ricochet. I think I would have left the thread up and put the "comment deleted" message up 50 times if necessary with the commenters name intact until the training effect set in (hitting the puppies with the rolled up paper, they know what they did)

Is this a ruse to find out the de facto winner?

Aww... I waited too long to join the thread.
I didn't get to read any of the comments, but I'll take your word for it, Lady Magistrate of Ricochet.

Actually it works the other way around. I expect that many, perhaps most of the members of Ricochet are here because this site conforms to the "code of conduct" we have always used in life.

Re: That's Not Funny
Pilgrim, I don't think the sudden change in tone is permanent. The problem is that there was no breathing room between the Delaware debate and other things. The contributors need to offer us lighter challenges for a while... and some more jokes.
But Ricochet has now been mentioned directly on Hannity's Fox News show and indirectly by Rush, so we can probably expect a sudden influx of new members. Older members may need to be especially patient so that it's perfectly clear Ricochet is not a typical forum.

Pretty true in my case, yes.

So maybe the BSA needs to add a "Dislike" to the seldom used "Like" and perhaps a CoC Violation alert button. Good training effect and some people may decide from the feedback that this isn't for them. I am much happier when the Editors are participating in the conversation without the need to edit.
Re: That's Not Funny
Agreed, Pilgrim. We'll be addressing this more later today or tomorrow, but for now we've taken to putting out the brush fires. We're also in the process of expelling some members for repeated or egregious violations.
