That Was Weird, Right?
I just caught the press conference from President Obama and I'm not sure what to think of it. It struck me as highly unpresidential to point out that your negotiating partners have found you so worthless that they are just going to bypass you. And all the whining. And the politics matched with the "I don't want to be political" type talk.
It was weird, right?
Jay Cost says it reminds him of Carter's "malaise" moment:
The two presidents offered decidedly different tones -- Carter as the preacher/therapist and Obama as the frustrated school marm -- but both were indicative of the same development. Carter and Obama had failed to accomplish their core campaign promise, and were left pointing fingers to explain their failure.
I understand that President Obama is frustrated by his impotence. But yikes, I don't think you're supposed to let people know that.

Political cover for the McConnell Plan.

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
From ABC's The Note
"We have now run out of time," the President declared at a hastily arranged press conference in the White House briefing room.
He said he has summoned Boehner, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to the White House for an emergency meeting at 11am on Saturday.
"I expect them to have an answer as to how they will get this thing done over the next week," Obama said.
Summoned Congress? Expect Congress to answer to him?
Gee, I wonder why negotiations never got very far ... The less you matter, the more you feel the need to impose yourself on those who do.

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
The President is not a king. He does not "summon" Congress.
Re: That Was Weird, Right?
In the polls, Obama is going down, down, and down. Boehner has him twisting in the wind. When he's cornered, all that this President can do is whine.

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
A President of the United States doing the impotent fool dance is not a pretty picture. He may have lectured on the Constitution in an Ivy League school, but every American now knows he has never actually read it.

An astonishingly petulant man is our president. He's the little prince.

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
" I have been left at the altar a couple times." So - does this mean he feels like he's not worthy ? Or - spurned by his suitors ? Is this sounding a little too whiny ? Is he figuring out that his base are " the whiners" ? Dr Rahe nails it. Time to get this guy to group, not some sycophancy, encounter baby !

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
Who was that guy doing the Obama impression? He wasn't very good, though he got the pontificatin arrogance down right, but he was not as cool as the real Obama. Maybe the real Obama was eating his peas and pulling off band aids. Certainly the real Obama must have had a very specific and logical proposal, in the form of a well crafted written budget plan, that somehow has been misplaced by the impressionist. Certainly no one would get that snarky or petulant over the bogged down negotiations if they had a plan that they were working towards.
The real Obama would never move the goal posts, he merely pulls the forball away when Charlie Brown tries to kick it.

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
Flownover, I concur with you. I thought President Obama sounded like a teenage girl when he said Boehner didn't return his call. And complaining of being left at the alter is beyond evaluation. What a terrible voice for America.
The world is taking notice of his/our weakness.
Is there another country that might be a little bit better last best hope?
I thought Boehner might cry when he spoke of "revenues". He is using their language not deconstructing. What a fright night. I'm going to get a drink.

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
I actually enjoyed listening to his news conference simply because you could tell he was very annoyed when giving it. I especially liked the re-reference to "corporate jet owners" among those to blame for his #&8%ed up mess of an economy.
It would have been great had someone of any real intelligence asked him why indeed the debt limit needed to be extended to 2013. Especially in light of his accusation that the Republicans in Congress cared more about their reelection than doing the right thing for the country. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black!

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
I would really like to hear the Congressional leaders rebuff the summons.
The public is badly in need of some Civics 101 lessons.

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
If you can't stand up to this guy, who can you stand up to? He makes every rookie mistake in the book, over and over. Remember when he said that if the stimulus passed unemployment wouldn't go above 8%? Nobody of the slightest intelligence in Washington makes those concrete claims, they are murder on the career. Announcing that he "expects" Congressional leaders to come submit their plans to him? That can only go one of two ways, and the best one is he dodges a bullet and everyone shows up to make him look credible.
I at least have some hope for Boehner now. McConnell is less than useless.

I'm worried. This President has never before experienced this kind of opposition. As today's press conference illustrated he doesn't have a clue how to deal with it either. My fear is that his Chicago/Alinsky background will be what he falls back on.
Could get very ugly.

We can only hope he takes off his mask and shows us his true self. The American people deserve no less

Carter?
Oh no, this is much, much worse. The Carter comparison went out the door a good year-and-a-half ago, at least.
I know this sounds hyperbolic every time I say it, but Obama is a clinical narcissist. Textbook. Checklist.
Not to mention the DSOC/DSA/New Party (if you don't know the acronyms, bone up) MarxismLite connections, mentoring by and seeking out communists, "community organizing," ad nauseum.
I miss Clinton. At least you can deal with the likes of Clinton. Obama will bring the whole deal down on our heads and don't for a moment humor yourself to think he won't.

Re: That Was Weird, Right?
I'm with you Mr. Tracy. It was said Clinton had bimbo explosions, but as the 2008 election drew closer, Obama kept having Commie explosions, with the media burying that as much as they could. The best of which being his own father, who once argued confiscation of a citizen's entire income could be justified as in the public good.

Hyperbolic? Where does megalomaniac fall on the psychopathology spectrum?

It isn't the narcissism, it's the leftism that worries me. Or maybe it's the combination. And the fact that so many voters were so easily bamboozled by a treasonous press to believe he was something else. This is what drives me into right-wing religious nuttery territory thinking about spiritual, not just political warfare.
Keep your powder dry and your lamp full, folks. There may be nothing as dangerous as a cornered megalomaniacal leftist demon. We're about to find out.
