Just moments ago, Meghan Clyne, Diane Ellis, Keith Urbahn and I concluded recording the long-overdue return of "The Young Guns" podcast. There are many reasons to listen (not least Diane's demonstration of some remarkable vocal gymnastics), but this episode also has upped the stakes for this weekend's Super Bowl. Ms. Clyne, an unrepentant New York Giants fan, and myself -- a New England Patriots supporter -- have a wager that will determine how the next episode of the podcast begins.

We've planted our flags. How about you? Who are you pulling for this weekend and why? And what will be greater -- the number of points scored or the number of worthwhile commercials?

A market-forecasting indicator using the Super Bowl has had an 80% success rate historically. Looking back at the 45 previous Super Bowls, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has usually finished up for the year after a win by an "original" National Football League team (before the merger with the American Football League), while the market's gone down when the AFL side has won.

But an improving economy during an election year usually means the incumbent gets re-elected.  Clearly then a Giants win forecasts an Obama win in November.

CJRun: As to commercials, here is a fun one that will apparently only be shown in Canada.

Too bad; it reminds me of attending a Florida Everblades game!

Nooooooo! Please don't wreck it by introducing politics where it doesn't belong!

Duane Oyen The only bright part of this NFL season was seeing the Packers 1) lose to KC, then 2) choke at home in their first playoff round.... (broad grin) · 1 hour ago

Oh Duane, how could you.

Where's EThompson on this thread? I bet she's got some major plans for Sunday.

Really Duane, that was cold! ;)

I am a nervous wreck and may have to remove myself from any public setting, at least for the first half. I'll check in during half time.

Need I say... Go Pats!! · 36 minutes ago

Well, it's always cold in Minneapolis, where we have the only 4-time Super Bowl loser never to win either (Denver is 2-4).  When you live next to Wisconsin, the fans tend to be a bit overbearing- both Rubber Duckie and I are surrounded by cheeseheads in our offices, each about a mile from Mall of America (Vikings) Field.

Another appreciation for NE is that they hired the great Ray Berry, and he brought them their first Super Bowl appearance.

Obama couldn't pick this year, chicken. Patriots 41, Giants 24. How hard is that, Mr I voted present.

Right... no politics or even financials allowed! This is mano-a-mano war, y'all.

BTW Joseph, I do share in your disappointment with the 49ers. Imagine the Belichick/Brady brain trust vs. Harbaugh-- whew!-- whatta game!

Plus you'd have had the unstoppable force of the Pats offense meets the immovable object of the Niners defense angle.

Personally I was hoping for a rematch of the Thanksgiving Har-bowl, brother vs. brother.  Can you imagine how depressed Jack Harbaugh must have been after watching both his sons lose championship games on the same day, and both because of bonehead special teams mistakes: a missed 32 yard FG and 2 fumbled punt returns?

Plus the team that foreshadows a GOP win is named the Patriots... and they hail from the same state as our likely nominee... all the signs are there, ignore them at your own peril!  ;-)

I would prefer my Packers.  Absent that, anyone but the Patriots.  They embody everything bad about the NFL.

This reminds me of the infamous Archie Manning quote made before his sons were scheduled to face each other in a 2006 regular season game dubbed the "Manning Bowl." When queried as to which team he was rooting for, Dad replied, "The quarterback."

Since Da Bears aren't playing, I root for the team that has the most Illini.  The University of Illinois fight song, Illinois Loyalty has a lyric, "On Giants, placing reliance, shouting defiance, Oskee-Wow-Wow!"  Therefore I root for Punter Steve Wheatherford and LT Dave Diehl from the University of Chief Illiniwek!  Go Giants!

Plus I don't want Tom Brady to match his Idol Joe Montana's superbowl win total.

I think you forgot Buffalo - not only a 4 time loser, but 4 in a row!

A day late, but just so you know:  Been a Giants fan since Y.A. Tittle's second tour throwing to Frank Gifford.  Ragtag Patriots were in the league nobody knew about; the most I cared for them was as collectible bottle caps off Cokes.  Only Patriot I've ever really rooted for was Steve Grogan.

My fresh JPP jersey will be out tomorrow night for Giants 34, Patriots 31, and it will be a great great game.
