Just moments ago, Meghan Clyne, Diane Ellis, Keith Urbahn and I concluded recording the long-overdue return of "The Young Guns" podcast. There are many reasons to listen (not least Diane's demonstration of some remarkable vocal gymnastics), but this episode also has upped the stakes for this weekend's Super Bowl. Ms. Clyne, an unrepentant New York Giants fan, and myself -- a New England Patriots supporter -- have a wager that will determine how the next episode of the podcast begins.

We've planted our flags. How about you? Who are you pulling for this weekend and why? And what will be greater -- the number of points scored or the number of worthwhile commercials?

No offense to either of you, but I much prefer college football to the NFL and I can't think of 2 teams that I would less like to see in the Superbowl.

Portland doesn't have an NFL team 'cause if we got one, Seattle would want one too.

Oh, nevermind.

Pichers and catchers report in less than a month.

Someone say something about a football game this weekend?

Troy Senik, Ed.

Ouch! My first loyalty in the NFL is to the Seattle Seahawks (there's a Seahawks helmet adorning my office/podcast studio). That makes it all the more hurtful that I have no effective rejoinder.

I'm a Pats fan -- for long enough to remember the glorious Ron Ehrhart and Rod Rust eras -- but I only bet on horses.

Worthwhile commercials?

Parlay the Pats minus 2 1/2 and take the over at 55 points.  That's my investment advice.  You'll thank me later.

Even here on the far side of the world, we know that this team has been playing for this game all season long.

Home town team (I fell asleep as a kid listening to WEEI): Pats.

I'm still too deeply in mourning over the 49ers elimination to work up much enthusiasm for this Super Bowl.

Having grown up in Connecticut, I'm a Pats girl.  Plus I love the Tom Brady story--the way he was raised by Joe Montana fans, almost didn't get drafted, then turns out to be a superstar quarterback of Montana-like proportions.  I like his hard work and self-effacing style.  Plus, he's Catholic. :)

But I'm a fair weather fan, and hardly pay attention unless and until they make well into the post-season.  I've seen only two games so far this year and both were doozies:  their come-from-behind total trouncing of the Bills, and then that nail-biter with the Ravens.

I'm still a little sore over their Superbowl loss to the Giants a few years back, even though, having been born in NYC, I can't be too totally anti-Giants.

So there's at least one person on Ricochet who'll get a "Butch from the Cape" allusion.

I hope you finally settled the question of whether Ricochet Young Gun podcasts taste great or are less filling.

I guess I'll root for Eli, so that his brother finally gets some good news this year.

RIP Butch (and we finally did win a world series, but I suspect you were watching [bitterly? Did you at least laugh?] from the luxury box in the sky).

Then you'll appreciate this.  Though I can stomach Romney, whenever I see him I hear Butch's voice mocking Drew Bledsoe defenders: "He's tall and has a strong arm... he's tall and has a strong arm...he's tall..."

Ms. Clyne has nothing to be repentent about.  Personally, I was hoping for the Ravens so the Giants could avenge the loss of Andolusia in 2000.

We traded up from "Drew Bozo" in the QB dept.

I've got to go with the Giants as they beat my team - The Packers. It's a late start for me (11.30 pm GMT) but I'm looking forwards to a great game.

I don't like the Pats, but a friend will be in Vegas putting down a wager for me on the Pats -2.5.  Go Pats!

Breakdown (per game):

Offence:

Total points: Pats - 32.1 (3rd in league), Giants - 24.6 (9th)

Total yards: Pats - 428 (2nd), Giants - 385.1 (8th)

Passing yards: Pats - 317.8 (2nd), Giants - 295.9 (5th)

Rushing yards: Pats - 110.2 (20th), Giants - 89.2 (32nd)

Defense:

Total Points: Pats - 21.4 (15th), Giants - 25 (25th)

Total yards: Pats - 411.1 (31st), Giants - 376.4 (27th)

Passing yards: Pats - 293.9 (31st), Giants - 255.1 (29th)

Rushing yards: Pats - 293.9 (31st), Giants - 117.1 (17th)

What we have is two very good passing teams with only about 22 yards per game difference.  Giants don't have a running game and the Pats aren't a whole lot better. Over the season, the big difference is that the Pats put almost one touchdown per game on the scoreboard from offensive stats that are not that much different.
