With the Super Bowl almost upon us, let's get some Super Bowl picks on the record. I say the 49ers will prevail with a tight win over the Ravens vaunted, but aged, defense. Score: 28-24.

What are your picks?

I predict that the Ravens win by the score of 31-27.However, the only outcome that would surprise me would be a blowout win by the 49ers.

Ravens cruise. 27-14. You can take this to the bank even though I can't name a single player other than Ray Lewis.

Two picks for pretty big 49ers wins...interesting. I don't know if San Francisco is going to keep Ray Rice or Pitta contained all game. If Flacco has a solid run game and an outlet tight end to keep the Niners D busy he could have nice scoring opportunities downfield.

Harbaugh will be the winning coach.

The only truly important thing about this year's Super Bowl is that 2 former UO Ducks are guaranteed rings.  Either Haloti Ngata and Ed Dickson, or LaMichael James and Will Tukuafu.  I suppose I lean more toward LaMike & Tuku because I'm a West Coaster.

I have a large bet on the money line for SF. 34-30. After the last set of games, I'd fade my pick though. SF defense will prove too much for Flacco and company unless Rice dominates. Navarro and Patrick will have monster games along with the Smiths. As usual, turnovers will be critical.

I predict that the lines at the grocery store will be very short at 8 pm EST, making it the best time of the year to perform the usually unbearable task of grocery shopping.  I plan to stock up.

I predict no field goals for the Niners and two for the Ravens.  Niners win 28-27.  Ravens will be unable to stop the Niners offense at the end of the game to prevent the go ahead touchdown.

At least that is how I would script it.....

Ravens 24-20.

Not that I care.  The Broncos broke my heart, and it's not getting any better.  Let's get this game over so the healing can begin.

Ravens, 21-17.

I like both teams. Strong defense, commitment to the run, but happy to air it out. Balance. Both teams prove the way to win in football is try to excel in all aspects of the game, and not to leave any aspect behind.

Excellence as eudaimonia

That's what makes the Harbaughs solid coaches. They don't have a commitment to the latest fad, or the trendiest "scheme." They're committed to everything. Do everything well.

Football is essentially a unique game of balancing speed and strength. Physically, speed and strength are opposites. On the most basic level of body technique, strength requires you to plant your feet and speed requires the opposite.

Football players prize agility, which means the ability to transition between speed and strength as quickly and fully as possible. Agility requires intelligence of a certain sort, to know (as an old coach of mine would say) when to set anchor and when to sail.

Both teams are agile. They adjust quickly. So I don't think we're going to have a blowout, because both teams can compensate. So I'd guess that the game will come down to injuries and turnovers.

I'm right with you, TR.  Being a Denver native, my dream Superbowl this year would have had the Broncos beating the Seattle Seahawks.

You're going to skip out on one of the last "cultural" events that is truly shared nation wide? At least stock up on chips, dip, and sodas while you're there. Super Bowl weekend always has the best deals for those!

I'm a fan of the Evil Empire, so I'd prefer that the Ravens win. Might as well have lost to the best team...

I'd have to say though, that if anything is our "national pastime" anymore--aside from various Real Houswives shows or Kardashians and keeping up with them--it would be football.

I am on:

1. Beyonce - Will she be showing cleavage first song - Yes -275

2. Superbowl MVP to thank who first - Teammates +200

3. Will Opposing coach try to ice kicker? - Yes +225

4. SF to win -3 1/2

5. Over 47 1/2   (31-23)

I have great confidence in the cleavage pick.  The others not so much.

One typically needs quite a bit of strength and explosion to have speed.  For example, Usain Bolt is not the typical sprinter.

That said, I think there's something to the tension you describe...perhaps something more like "hold fast" vs. "explode?"

Yes... football is too much of a bread and circuses spectacle for me to enjoy without a bit of guilt.  And don't get me started about how they've manipulated the rules over the years.  I believe conservatives accept the virtues of football way too uncritically.

Bring on baseball so they can ruin my summah!
