You know, if you didn't keep watch on the Turkish press, you could miss items like this completely.

Iran, it seems, has built a flying saucer

The Zuhal--that's what they're calling it--comes complete with GPS and an HD 10 mega-pixel imaging system. Or so the Iranians say.

Honestly, that kind of looks like a frisbee to me. But what do I know.

Actually, to be more precise, if you didn't have Turkish friends who keep track of the Turkish press and post these things on Facebook so that everyone can make flying saucer jokes, you could miss them completely. But fortunately, I have Turkish friends who do just that.

Thanks, Turkish flying-saucer-joke friends! Keep on keeping me posted!

Actually, the picture in Claire's post is from a Popular Science concept article on the possible future of aircraft manufacturers' flying saucer designs. I don't know if it's still possible to get to the article, but there's a picture on the PopSci site here.

Claire--I would really enjoy an article explaining WHY conspiracy theories and paranoia seem so prevalent throughout the Middle Eastern populations.  I remember the accusation that Israel was training sharks to attack Muslims!

You ask a fascinating question, and yes, it's worth an article. Remind me.

Conspiracy theories and superstitions abound in most places and cultures. Here in Mexico, witchcraft is still an everyday thing... Part of the human condition ..

Building a functional flying saucer is an exreeeemly difficult task. If they wanted to be convincing, they should have built a flying wing, like Northorp in the old days of aviation. Now there is a design to prove ones mettle...

May I take a stab at that?

I suggest that Muslims, believing their religion and their worldview to be the perfect revelations of Allah, can only explain the fall of the Caliphate and the miserable state of most Muslim countries in terms of evil conspiracies perpetrated by Infidels and Jews.

To believe otherwise is to acknowledge the fatal flaws of Islam and their own fecklessness.
