Stop the Presses! Nancy Pelosi Agrees with Paul Rahe!
In a recent post, Paul argued that much of the animus directed at the Catholic church (most recently on contraception) by liberal Catholics and the liberal media and the liberal establishment is in fact a matter of chickens coming home to roost: i.e., that over the past few decades the bishops and clergy gave cover to a left that interpreted the Sermon on the Mount as a ringing call for a bigger and more encompassing federal government. The sub-theme here is that this was done while traditional doctrines went untaught.
Now Nancy Pelosi chimes in. The National Catholic Register has a story quoting the former Speaker as saying the following:
Ninety-eight percent of women in childbearing age that are Catholic use contraception. So, in practice the church has not enforced this and now they want the federal government and private insurance to enforce it. It just isn’t consistent to me.
Methinks Paul would agree with the very next line in the Register story, which says that "[l]eaving aside the bogusness of her silly statistics and the absurdity that not forcing people to pay for something is enforcing a religious rule, Nancy has a point."
