Scrolling through a comment thread just now, I discovered that our own Pat Sajak--and Pat, being his usual humble self, merely made a small note of what is, of course, earth-shaking news--our own Pat Sajak has discovered that everyone--everyone--has got global warming all wrong:

It is incredible to me that this whole issue began with a misunderstanding. It's been nearly twenty years since renowned climatologist and champion amateur fisherman, Dr. Hadley Murchenson warned that his favorite bait was being over-harvested. His clarion call on the subject of global worming has since been distorted by fellow scientists, and his untimely death in 2003 from a severe carp bite ended his efforts to clarify the matter.

See?  Yet another story the mainstream media has left to us right here at Ricochet. Who can tell us about Dr. Murchenson?  Can someone give us an overview of the man's biography?  Or a list of his scientific publications?  For that matter, what can the Ricochetoise tell us about global worming itself?  Worms, worms--what difference have worms made in your life?

Warming- Worming. Either one requires massive growth and intervention of government and decreased standards of living for all. Pick your poison.

I for one don't want to open this can of worms and would not touch it with a 10 foot Shimano rod and reel. All I can say is that Pat's story sounds fishy to me but I do not want to carp.

Yes it is, Fred. But I was having a particularly good day when it was taken.

I'm getting a strong Michael Sheen vibe from Mr. Sajak's pic.

Which picture were you talking about, Fred?  I think the worm pic is indeed amazing... or was it the other one?

Imperial conquest, yes.   American earthworms are invasive Europeans. Where have we heard that story before?  At least they are not white males. They are red hermaphrodites (like Janeane Garofalo).

Not many people know earthworms are not native to North America but are an invasive species brought over from Europe.

Never mind all that, has there ever another man in history who died from a carp bite?

It all started with a slightly garbled conversation on an early mobile phone, wherein the NYT reporter misunderstood "local worming" to be "global warming".

Given the multi-disciplinary nature of climatology, it is not surprising that Dr. Murchenson's career was rich and varied in accomplishments:

  • Taught Steve Irwin everything he knew about fish
  • Managed an abortive "New Pepsi" project for a major soft drink purveyor
  • Obtained USDA grants to recover mercury from tuna
  • Senior "atmospherics" consultant for Waterworld and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou?
  • Science adviser to "Dole for President"

The Concordat of Worms made  a big difference in all of our lives.

If it's of any interest to anyone, our local coffee shop uses recyclable cups that they collect for vermiculture (within which I dabble).  It really works.  The cup and lid completely disappear.
