Stock Tips
So! Looks like I've got a little unexpected windfall coming my way. Seems the Globe & Mail is going to pay me 250 dollars to review Born to Bark: My Adventures with an Irrepressible and Unforgettable Dog. (Why that title? Well, first they asked me to review In Ishmael's House: A History of Jews in Muslim Lands, but I gave that some thought, and decided I just couldn't face it--I mean, it's enough that I'm living it. So I asked them if just for once I could review a book that didn't leave me completely depressed, and because they're good people, they said yes. Born to Bark is mine.)
I don't have the check in hand yet, but I really do hear a chicken pecking at that eggshell, so tonight I'm deciding how to spend it. Usually I'd do something boring, like paying my electricity bill. But this time, as a gesture of optimism and faith in the American economy, I'm going to invest it in the stock market.
I'm looking for tips. What are your favorite stock picks these days? And why? I'm willing to think about commodities, too. And, you know, I'd show my optimism and faith in some other country's economy, if you've got some good advice. Just as long as I make this little nest egg grow. Because I need to retire on it, you see.

I don't know if there's much money to be made, but I think soon, the benefits of GM crops will finally overcome all the fears associated with it. "Golden Rice," an example:

Verizon (VZ) is paying out a hefty dividend at its current price, and a vertically-integrated oil company like Marathon (MRO) could be gold if "overseas contingency" issues crop up in your neck of the woods.
If you really want to show optimism in the American economy, American Eagle (AEO) covers so many bases: retail, headquartered in PA, "American" in their name, haha. Last but not least, you could contribute to the ruination of public discourse by purchasing News Corp. stock. I'll note that I own these last two - money where my mouth is, and such.
Wait, are we going to have to file some supplemental IRS form because we've given this advice?? It's a trap!

Re: Stock Tips
$250 is not going to get you very far. Very few brokerages will deal with odd lots which is what a purchase of under 100 shares is referred to as. Most mutual funds won't accept investments of less than $500 either. Best bet, buy something that makes you feel good, a new iPod, maybe. I have been running out of space on my 80GB and have started looking longingly at the 160Gb model. Just a thought. :-)

C'mon Claire, I know you're in Murky Turkey, but still... invest in gold. Watergaters, tv district attorneys, they're all pitching it. Everybody who's anybody knows the deal.
